The foldable phone market has diversified over the past years, no longer a rat race between two giants. Many brands have jumped into the fray, each adding their own piece to complete the puzzle. Whether it’s imaging or durability, new foldables are addressing the concerns and doubts that consumers have about the viability of this kind of product. One thing that hasn’t exactly changed for the better is the price tag attached to these foldable phones, even years after rumors of cheaper options, at least of the non-clamshell kind. Rather than downgrade the experience to also push down the price, however, it might be more effective to offer a design that makes sense for a four-digit figure. That seems to be the premise behind the “pro-foldable” Vivo X Fold 3 Pro, so we take it for a good spin to see if it’s truly worth its weight in gold.

Aesthetics

There is a certain elegance to the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro’s simple design. Gone are the extraneous lines and shapes, leaving only the essential elements of a stylish phone. By no means is it boring or plain, especially given the visual texture on the Solar White and Eclipse Black colorways, just that the design doesn’t distract you beyond the first brush nor does it hold your attention hostage.

The phone is incredibly thin and, as we’ll see later, light, especially when unfolded flat at only 5.2mm thick, disregarding the equally thick camera bump. When folded, it does reach 11.20mm, though that’s not that far from the dimensions of regular slabs of metal and glass. In other words, you no longer look like you’re hiding two phones in the same pocket.

That aforementioned camera design, however, will be a bit divisive. On the one hand, it doesn’t look that awkward with a centrally positioned large circle that seems to mimic the lens of a traditional camera. On the other hand, it is still a very large circle on the back of the phone, which has some repercussions when it comes to handling the phone. Some would also consider such a large design element an eyesore, though it thankfully offers some significant benefit to its unavoidable presence.

Ergonomics

At only 236g light, the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro is pretty much on par with many premium flagships of the non-foldable kind, especially with “ultra,” “pro,” or “max” in their names. That makes this foldable phone feel comfortable to hold, especially when you consider how large their screens are. The external screen, in particular, has a 21:9 aspect ratio, which also puts it closer to regular candy bar designs. It’s still tall and narrow, though not as narrow as Samsung’s notorious design.

While the weight and shape of the phone lend it well for convenient and comfortable handling, there are a few features that may trip up a few users. Primary is that camera bump that could hinder the movement of your fingers on the back. Conversely, it also creates a protrusion that rests on your finger, helping avoid accidental drops. Either way, expect the phone to wobble on a desk when unfolded and lying flat on it. The alert slider, which gives a quick physical way to mute or unmute the phone, is also placed close to the top, which means you can’t easily reach it using the same hand you’re holding the phone with. They’re not huge deal-breakers, just small nitpicks that, when taken together, could take out the enjoyment of using the phone every day.

Performance

Vivo definitely didn’t pull punches when it came to making sure the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro could match other flagships this year. In some ways, it might even surpass them. Running on the current-gen Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and paired with a generous 16GB of RAM, it can handle anything you throw at it with aplomb. In synthetic benchmarks, it can stand head-to-head with the Galaxy S24 Ultra, and it might even surpass the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 if Samsung continues to keep memory down to 12GB max.

Battery is another department where Vivo is leading the race, cramming an unbelievable 5700mAh capacity inside such a thin and light device. This phone is guaranteed to last half a day, at least on “regular” and mixed usage, and thanks to 100W charging, it will only take an hour to get it back to full. There’s also fast 50W wireless charging, but you’ll need Vivo’s special charger to achieve that speed.

Both the external 6.53-inch 2748×1172 and internal 8.03-inch 2480×2200 screens are at the top of their class, showing vivid colors and exceptional brightness that make the phone a joy to use outdoors on either side of the fold. Thanks to Vivo’s engineering, the crease on the internal foldable display is barely visible. That hinge allows the fold to hover between 60 to 180 degrees without collapsing, creating that tiny laptop-like experience that you may or may not love. Vivo does have a “flex mode” to take advantage of that angle, as well as other features that only make sense for foldable phones. Quickly folding and then unfolding the phone again triggers the split screen feature where you can pick a second app to open side-by-side with the current one. It’s a bit gimmicky and probably won’t make owners feel comfortable about the longevity of that hinge.

The large bump on the back of the Vivo X Fold 3 is easily justified by the rather beefy sensors it houses there. Leading the pack is a 50MP wide sensor with autofocus and OIS, and it is joined by a 64MP telescope camera with a periscope lens, also with AF and OIS. The 50MP ultra-wide shooter sadly drops the optical image stabilization but still manages to perform well.

All in all, the foldable delivers impressive photos and videos, especially with the Vivo V3 dedicated imaging chip in action. Details are rich and colors are accurate, and you can also pick the mode of vividness that best conveys the message you want the photo to send. The camera system is also co-engineered with ZEISS, which not only means the famed ZEISS T* coating but also different presets that mimic the output of the optics maker’s most famous lenses. It’s definitely great to see foldable phone cameras finally stepping up to the challenge, though the price in design and literal cost will be something people will need to consider before making a purchase decision.

Sustainability

Vivo is one of the few smartphone manufacturers that are taking big steps in going green, though that is sadly not directly seen nor felt on the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro. Instead, we can only look to the company’s wider sustainability efforts, particularly in running its business on green energy and doing its part in replenishing the planet’s greenery.

What it does promise with its newest foldable, however, is that it’s not going to end up in the trash or even recycling centers quickly. Durability has been one of the biggest concerns consumers have with foldables, so it’s not surprising that Vivo spent a lot of resources on ensuring the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro will be as reliable as more traditional smartphones. Those measures include a light yet ultra-durable carbon fiber hinge, protective Armor Glass for the cover display, and glass-like UPE fiber for the back panel. The phone is also rated IPX8, which is great for water protection but not so much for dust, raising worries that these tiny particles could inflict fatal damage on the sensitive internals of the phone.

Value

It’s pretty clear that Vivo spared no effort in equipping the X Fold 3 Pro with the best of the best in smartphone technologies this year. On normal smartphones, that would be a given, but such features on a foldable raise the stakes and the prices higher. At around $1,600 to $1,900, depending on where you get it, it’s not exactly an easily accessible product, especially when you consider it’s not available in some global markets.

The Vivo X Fold 3 doesn’t exist in a vacuum, however, and when you consider that its peers ask for nearly the same figure, you begin to see some of the advantages the foldable phone has. It’s definitely not lacking much, and it cuts quite a striking figure with its slim profile and lightweight body. Suffice it to say, there’s a reason it has “Pro” in its name, and it’s that same reason you’ll need to pay a premium for it.

Verdict

Samsung and Huawei kicked off the foldable phone race, and although almost six years have passed, the prices for these products have barely gone down. What makes matters worse is that in some cases, the prices have remained the same or even increased but have very little to show for it. If you’re going to charge a premium for a product, you should be making sure the product is actually premium.

That’s the kind of promise that the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro offers, cutting almost no corners in the name of delivering the best foldable experience with current industry technologies, not those from two or three years ago. It’s not an easy promise to make, especially when you consider the need to also make the design slimmer and lighter, but Vivo seems to have actually pulled it off. For that feat alone, the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro definitely deserves your consideration, even with that hefty price tag.

During a work trip to Tokyo, I timed my visit perfectly with the launch of these new models. The buzz around the MoonSwatch collection was undeniable, and the excitement was palpable. After waiting in line at the Swatch location in Ginza, I snagged the model I wanted: the Lava. Its bold color and unique design immediately caught my attention, and I was eager to see if it lived up to the hype. I picked one up from the boutique to thoroughly review it for Yanko Design.

Aesthetics

The Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch Mission to Earth Lava grabs attention with its bright orange bioceramic case. This vibrant color is more than just eye-catching; it’s a deliberate nod to the Speedmaster “Ultraman,” known for its striking orange seconds hand. Video streaming has become its own entertainment category and industry, allowing almost anyone to reach out to millions across the world and maybe even make some money while doing so. The barrier to entry is quite low, at least when it comes to equipment, as long as you have a smartphone or even a computer with a webcam. As you grow your content and your audience, however, you will eventually find yourself looking for tools that are made to support such activities, like a webcam that can help bring out the best in your video content and presentations. Of course, webcams are a dime a dozen, especially if you consider the cheap and unsurprisingly basic options out there. You might think you need to spend big bucks for a really good webcam, but the new OBSBOT Tiny 2 Lite says otherwise. Compact yet packing quite a punch, the 4K PTZ webcam promises AI-powered features at an affordable price, and that naturally piqued our curiosity to see if it’s really good as it sounds.

Aesthetics

Webcam designs are myriad and varied, and most of them are meant to sit on top of computer monitors or laptop lids for use in video chats. That often means using clips or, worse, adhesives, and they take on shapes that are designed to blend in with the monitor, leading to rather uninspiring designs. It might be called a webcam, but the OBSBOT Tiny 2 Lite is really a versatile gimbal camera that can be used for almost any purpose and in almost any setting as long as you’re connected to a computer, of course.

As such, it’s no surprise that the OBSBOT Tiny 2 Lite looks more like one of those gimbal cameras than a webcam, and for good reason. It’s a PTZ or “pan, tilt, zoom” camera, after all, and its base and arm work to move the camera as needed. Yes, you don’t have to position the camera yourself, but more on that later. What this means is that this webcam hardly looks like a webcam at all. Its rounded square base and the square camera hanging from its arm make it resemble a miniature professional video camera, and that’s a comparison that’s more than just skin deep.

All in all, the OBSBOT Tiny 2 Lite has a compact and minimalist design that is distinctive but not distracting. It’s small enough to take with you anywhere your laptop and your work need to go, while still packing quite a collection of powerful features. The camera itself barely has any physical controls, creating a clean and professional-looking aesthetic. That means you’ll have to rely on indirect methods of control, like the OBSBOT App, hand gestures, or the optional remote control.

Ergonomics

You won’t be holding the OBSBOT Tiny 2 Lite in your hand, not unless you put it on a selfie stick or handle. It’s meant to either mount on top of you a monitor, stand on a desk, or attach to a tripod, and the camera’s design supports all three. Rather than relying on a separate clip that you might lose, the Tiny 2 Lite features a built-in stand that unfolds from the bottom, forming a simple cantilever-like mechanism that uses gravity and physics to stick to the top of a computer screen. It is, however, a very simple mechanism, and it might struggle to support older, thicker monitors as well as very slim laptop lids.

When in use, you won’t be touching the camera directly either, since there are no buttons in the first place, other than turning the camera down to activate its privacy mode. Your primary control method will be through the computer app that configures the camera’s settings, but OBSBOT really wants you to rely on automatic operations powered by its AI. For more precise control from a distance, however, you might prefer to spend an extra $49 for the optional remote control slash presentation clicker. Depending on your workflow, you might find this absence of direct control liberating or extra work.

Performance

OBSBOT made a name for itself with 4K webcams packed in tiny designs, and the Tiny 2 Lite is no different. What is different, however, is that it selects only the hardware and features that deliver the best possible experience without asking too much from the consumer’s finances. For example, the 1/2-inch CMOS sensor is quite capable, enabling 4K 30fps as well as 1080p 60fps video recording with crisp and clear details. It supports HDR, though not the PixGain HDR that the more expensive non-Lite OBSBOT Tiny 2 boasts of, and it only has a single ISO for all kinds of lighting conditions.

While the video quality that the Tiny 2 Lite produces is already good, the camera’s real selling point is its intelligent hands-free controls. Of course, this newer model leverages plenty of AI so that you can leave it to decide what it thinks is the best shot, whether it’s zooming up close or using a more panoramic shot. The camera tracks you as you go around, making presentations and demonstrations look more dynamic and natural. It also supports auto framing, where it pans or zooms to adjust to the number of people going in and out of view. If you need more direct control, you don’t have to reach for the remote and just use hand gestures to adjust the camera to your liking. As for that movement, it’s pretty smooth and quick, easily adjusting to your own movement as if you have a human behind the camera.

As many AI features that OBSBOT crammed in such a small and accessible device, it also had to leave out quite a number of them that you’d see on the OBSBOT Tiny 2. It doesn’t have voice control, for example, which might actually be a good thing for more privacy-concerned users, but neither does it have a desktop mode where the camera swings down to capture, rotate, and frame what you’re doing on the desk, which could be your notes or instructions for some process. The biggest “downgrade,” however, is using a slower USB 2.0 connection only, a decision that’s sure to become a bottleneck when you need fast video transfers from camera to computer. Fortunately, most of these features can be considered “extras” from a content creator’s point of view, allowing the OBSBOT Tiny 2 Lite to still deliver a solid performance at almost half the price of its older sibling.

Sustainability

One of the reasons why webcams are so ubiquitous is because of how easy and cheap it is to get the materials needed to make them. That means a load of plastic, which is admittedly lighter and more resilient than a premium but hefty aluminum chassis. Unfortunately, that doesn’t bode well for the sustainability of these products, especially the ones that feel and look cheap and are more likely to be thrown out the moment they start malfunctioning.

The OBSBOT Tiny 2 Lite thankfully doesn’t look cheap nor feel like a throwaway product, but it’s still not something that will last you a long time if you aren’t careful. You won’t want to take it on daring adventures, especially in extreme conditions. This isn’t an action cam anyway, but it could still let you do some outdoor streaming if the weather allows it.

Value

OBSBOT launched the Tiny 2 last year to much applause for the wide array of smart features packed in a compact and stylish design. The one complaint has been its rather steep price tag, and the new Tiny 2 Lite finally addresses that. For only $179, it crams many of those AI features, particularly the core functions that truly define the Tiny 2. Naturally, it had to leave some out, but did OBSBOT cut off too much?

That’s hardly the case, as the Tiny 2 Lite delivers a solid PTZ webcam experience. Admittedly, that price tag might still look a bit too high, and not all features will appeal to everyone who needs a webcam. Those who mainly use webcams for meetings will find little reason to spend more on such a camera, though there are options like sleep mode made for those times when you need to briefly step away from a meeting.

Verdict

Being stuck at home doing video meetings and chats has made us realize how webcams seem to have been stuck in the early 2000s. A whole new crop of more powerful cameras has grown from this need, some going beyond just making you look presentable for a meeting. The OBSBOT Tiny 2 Lite is designed for budding creators who need to focus on the content they’re recording instead of having to fiddle with camera controls. More than just high-quality 4K video, this small yet powerful PTZ webcam leverages AI to do the heavy lifting of framing the perfect shot to captivate your audience, clearly get your point across, or simply have fun. Best of all, you won’t have to break the bank just to get your hands on a tool that looks so simple yet packs quite a punch, helping you look professional in any video.

AI is the buzzword in the tech industry, with mainstream media picking up on it and sometimes not in a good way. All the benefits that the technology brings, however, are for naught if only a select few can afford to use it. AI on smartphones promises quality-of-life improvements and exciting creative features, but only if you have the latest and greatest models with powerful specs and matching high prices. Fortunately, AI on mobile is such a hot topic that manufacturers are bringing those features to almost any new device. That’s pretty much the premise of the OPPO Reno 12 Pro, specifically the global edition that the brand just launched, one of the first few to advertise these AI benefits on what some would consider a mid-range model. But is it a potent combination or is the experience hampered by the Reno 12 Pro’s hardware? We take the phone for a spin to bring you the answers.

Aesthetics

Companies avoid using the label “mid-range” or “mid-tier” for good reason. They often come with the connotation of lacking quality and appeal, which is definitely not something that can be said for the Reno 12 Pro. Right off the bat, you’ll be surprised by how enchanting the phone is, especially the Nebula Silver colorway we received for this review. OPPO utilizes what it calls Fluid Ripple Texture that gives the phone’s back a 3D visual effect of liquid gently moving underneath the glass. It even has something like a parallax effect that gives the illusion that there’s truly some solid mass despite having a completely flat surface. The play of light, shadow, and colors has a mesmerizing effect that gives the phone a more stylish and elegant air.

The other two color options, Sunset Gold and Space Brown, are no less attractive but have a different approach. They use a two-tone design that combines a matte section and a smaller glossy area separated by a chic metal-like ribbon running across the width of the phone. It’s a familiar composition, only arranged upside-down, giving the Reno 12 Pro a distinctive look. Unfortunately, this design has one rather critical flaw, the glossy part will always be where your palm rests, which means it will always have oils and smudges whenever you hold it.

The phone’s flat edges give it a modern look and its reflective surface gives the impression of a metallic nature. It is, however, a sleight of hand, given how the material is actually a new proprietary alloy that OPPO promises has the same durability but with less weight. All in all, the OPPO Reno 12 Pro definitely has a striking presence that’s almost on par with more expensive flagships.

Ergonomics

Given the phone’s large size, it’s almost shocking that the OPPO Reno 12 Pro weighs only 180g. Part of that is probably thanks to the absence of “real” metal in the frame, utilizing OPPO’s High-Strength Alloy Framework instead. On the one hand, this gives the phone a lightweight body that lessens the strain on your hand. On the other hand, no pun intended, it sometimes makes the phone feel a bit flimsy, lacking the substance you’d find on premium handsets.

Smartphone designs these days either go for flat edges or the more traditional curved screens, but the OPPO Reno 12 Pro finds a rather curious middle ground. Its sides are quite flat, but the screen isn’t exactly the same. It has a very minimal curvature not only on the left and right sides but also top and bottom but never goes over the edges. OPPO says this design delivers that same immersive viewing experience without the accidental touches that curved screens are notorious for. Along with more rounded corners, this design offers comfort and confidence in your grip, making for a more pleasurable smartphone experience.

Performance

The OPPO Reno 12 Pro isn’t exactly new but it is only now making its way to global markets. That journey, however, seems to have taken a toll on the handset, and OPPO decided to use a custom MediaTek Dimensity 7300-Energy. This variant of the processor is geared towards more efficient battery use, but it’s still based on a rather mid-range silicon line. Fortunately, the phone still performs admirably, especially with 12GB of RAM, though you might see some stuttering or dropped frames in more intensive games. In exchange, however, OPPO gives the Reno 12 Pro a feature that’s all but gone from smartphones these days: a microSD card slot sharing space with the second SIM card slot.

Like any other smartphone these days, OPPO takes great pride in the Reno 12 Pro’s imaging system, and for good reason. It boasts two 50MP sensors, one for the main wide shooter and another for telephoto. These high-performance cameras produce impressive images, even on overcast days, bringing rich detail and accurate colors to every shot. These two cameras also work together to deliver beautiful bokeh effects in portrait mode, creating an accurate separation of foreground and background and giving the latter a pleasant blur. Sadly, the 8MP ultra-wide camera barely holds a candle to these two, but it thankfully still gets the basics right. Even more impressive, however, is the 50MP front-facing camera that not only has autofocus but can even take videos in 4K UHD quality.

Given that the main selling point of this generation of the Reno family is AI, we definitely have to say a few words about it. At the time of this writing, the rollout of some of the features is still ongoing or scheduled, but the complete set is definitely something worth waiting for. You have a combination of generative AI features across the board, from intelligently handling the performance of the phone to tweaking your photos to match a certain appearance with the AI Studio. Leveraging the power of Google Gemini, The Reno 12 Pro features an AI sidebar that can analyze the content displayed on the screen and offer relevant tools for it. It can, for example, summarize a long article into a few bullet points, recommend a text to post on social media, or even speak out the contents of a website. This is just the tip of the iceberg for the AI features that OPPO is bringing to everyone who can afford it, and the Reno 12 Pro’s price point makes sure of that.

Sustainability

While OPPO has had strong advocacy for the use of sustainable processes and materials on its phones, it’s not easy to see that on the OPPO Reno 12 Pro, at least not directly. It doesn’t mention any use of recycled materials, for one, and its new alloy material is unsurprisingly a big secret. It wouldn’t be surprising, however, if it had a considerable amount of plastic in the mix, which would be on par with most mid-range phones.

Instead, the company focuses more on the durability and longevity of its design, ensuring that the phone won’t meet an untimely end that quickly. It uses the latest Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection for the screen and boasts an IP65 dust and water resistance rating. Curiously, OPPO also talks about a biomimetic cushion for internal parts inspired by the structure of a sponge, further protecting sensitive components from bumps and falls. That said, only a proper teardown will reveal the true nature of that new protective layer.

Value

The OPPO Reno 12 Pro is quite a looker and it boasts plenty of AI features you’d only hear about on premium flagships. At the same time, it delivers a decent performance, especially for one that has the marks of a mid-tier market smartphone. The question, however, is whether all of these are worth the price OPPO is asking for.

To be fair, it isn’t asking for much, depending on the market. The Pro model goes for 599 EUR, roughly $650, which is far below the latest high-end offerings. That said, it isn’t the only player in this particular field, and OPPO is even up against the venerable Google Pixel 8a. The question then becomes one of availability as well as preferences, especially when it comes to the custom OPPO ColorOS Android experience. At the moment, though, the Reno 12 Pro is one of the few mid-range phones to offer such a variety of AI-powered features, but that number will only grow in the months ahead, giving OPPO plenty of competition in this space.

Verdict

There’s no escaping AI, at least for now, and it isn’t just in powerful PCs or the Web. Smartphones are the next arena for AI, whether you like it or not, but only if it’s something that more people can obtain and, more importantly, enjoy. Phone and chip manufacturers are naturally more interested in flexing their muscles to showcase powerful hardware to support advanced AI processes, but these won’t land in most people’s hands that easily.

The OPPO Reno 12 Pro represents a new breed of smartphones that is making AI more accessible to the masses with more wallet-friendly options. But it isn’t just its AI prowess that sets this phone apart. Its striking design is definitely a head-turner, and its promise of durability increases trust not only in the phone but also in OPPO’s brand. It definitely has some tough competition ahead, but at least for now, it is leading the pack with its combination of power, gracefulness, and, more importantly, price.

realme unveiled its latest GT series smartphone, the realme GT 6, at a global product launch event in Milan today. After a two-year hiatus from the global market, the company is poised to make a significant impact with its latest flagship. The recent appearance of realme’s founder and CEO, Sky Li, on the cover of Forbes magazine underscores the company’s intention to assert its presence more forcefully than ever. Earlier this year, realme announced a rebranding initiative, reaffirming its commitment to delivering value-packed devices for the youth. With the realme GT 6, the brand makes a bold claim, positioning it as the only “flagship killer” of 2024. It’s definitely packed with features, but is it truly deserving of the flagship killer title? We put it to the test to find out.

Aesthetics

The realme GT 6 is a device that commands attention. Instantly captivating, your eyes are drawn to the gleaming shiny mirror texture which fills out the upper third of the back panel, where the camera modules reside. According to realme, this texture is achieved using the industry’s first nano-level mirror coating technology which requires over 30 fine processes. Contrasting with this reflective texture, the lower two-thirds of the back panel features a matte metal texture.

The realme GT 6 is available in Fluid Silver or Razor Green, with our review unit coming in the former finish. The mirror texture first appeared to be a brilliant idea for taking selfies. However, the off-center positioning of the camera module and the limited size of the mirrored area compromise practicality. Another drawback of the material is that it attracts fingerprints and dust, detracting somewhat from its otherwise sleek appearance. Putting the complimentary case that comes in a box does not help as it does not cover the portion with the mirror finish. It’s still useful to quickly check oneself before snapping photos, though. Overall, the realme GT 6 is a phone that offers a unique and clean design, distinctive but not loud.

Ergonomics

The dimensions of the phone measure 162mm x 75mm x 8.6mm, with a weight of under 200g, just 199g, to be precise. The phone feels pleasantly lightweight and is easy to handle with one hand. The display features subtle curves on the side edges, complemented by a slightly tapered back panel. A curved side frame usually enhances grip without causing the edges to dig into the palm, but despite its absence here, holding the phone feels secure and comfortable.

On the right side of the phone are the volume locker and the power button, leaving nothing on the left side of the device. The IR blaster and stereo speaker are located on the top while the dual-nano SIM card slot, second stereo speaker, and USB port are located on the bottom.

The camera modules are not horizontally symmetrical, causing the phone to wobble slightly when placed on its back, though this issue is easily resolved by using a case. On the front, there is a centrally positioned cutout on the display for the front-facing camera, while the in-display fingerprint scanner is located near the bottom. The three camera lenses are positioned on the top left side of the device, arranged in a triangular pattern. The realme brand name embellishes the lower left corner of the back panel, which will often be covered by your hand and, therefore, almsot always out of sight. In summary, the realme GT 6 exudes a premium and sturdy feel that inspires confidence whenever you use it.

Performance

The realme GT 6 sports a triple camera setup. The 50MP main camera uses Sony LYT808, a 1/1.4” sensor with OIS, topped with a f/1.68 aperture lens. Accompanying it is a 50 MP telephoto camera with a 1/2.8” sensor and an f/2.0 aperture, together with an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera that utilizes a 1/4” Sony IMX355 sensor.

What all these specs mean in practice is that the realme GT 6 captures great photos in daylight. Images exhibit a good dynamic range, natural colors, and rich details. It also performs admirably in low-light conditions, producing well-balanced exposures, with plenty of details preserved and minimal noise.

Photos taken with the telephoto lens, while slightly less impressive, still offer very good quality. The ultrawide-angle camera delivers solid images as well, surprisingly despite its very modest sensor. realme has done an excellent job in harmonizing the rendering and post-processing across all three cameras, ensuring a consistent look and feel in the outputs. Activating night mode across all three cameras does not significantly alter the quality of the photos. In addition, the 32MP front-facing camera captures pleasant selfies with natural colors.

The realme GT 6 is equipped with AI Smart Removal, which relies on AndesGPT, a generative AI model developed by OPPO. There are two AI Smart Removal tools: Smart Lasso and Paint Over. With Smart Lasso, you circle around the unwanted objects in the photo to be removed. On the other hand, the Paint Over feature replaces the selected object in the photo with another object. With Pain Over, you can adjust the brush size. Both features require an internet connection. Removing unwanted objects with Smart Lasso is fast and results are impressive in most cases, whether in bright daytime photos or poorly lit nighttime photos.

Moving on to the video, the main and telephoto cameras can capture videos up to 4K at 60fps while the ultra-wide-angle camera is limited up to 1080p at 30fps. The front-facing camera let you record video up to 4K at 30fps. Only the 8MP ultra-wide shooter isn’t able to support 4K video recording, which is pretty disappointing for a phone that bills itself as a “flagship killer.” The videos captured with main and telephoto cameras are great offering a good level of sharpness and dynamic range, even in low-light footage. Although the ultrawide camera’s footage may display some noise, it still offers good color saturation. The Ultra Steady mode is exclusive to the main camera, providing excellent stabilization for both daytime and nighttime video recording.

When recording video in a dark environment under 6 lux, the night mode icon appears. Tapping it activates AI Night Vision, significantly enhancing video quality in poorly lit conditions. This footage captured is basically cranked up ISO and applies heavy smoothing, allowing you to capture somewhat usable footage even in near-total darkness. The difference is quite noticeable, making previously unwatchable videos much clearer.

Running Android 14 out of the box with a layer of realme UI 5.0, the realme GT 6’s AI features extend beyond image capturing and editing. For instance, AI Smart Loop provides an efficient and quick way to share content with third-party apps. You can select text, photos, or screenshots, then long-press and drag them to the right side of the screen. This action activates the space wheel, which displays a selection of pre-selected third-party apps or AI-suggested apps in a wheel format. You simply drop the selected content onto the desired app to share it.

Underneath the hood, the phone is powered by a Snapdragon 8s Gen3. It’s a less powerful version of Snapdragon 8 Gen3, yet it’s still one of the Snapdragons’s flagship SoC. The device sports 512GB of storage and 16GB of LDPDDR5X RAM which can be expanded by an additional 4GB. With this much power, it’s no surprise that the realme GT 6 offers great performance and smooth operation.

GT 6 features a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with 2,780 x 1,264 resolution and 10-bit color depth. The display can reach a whooping peak brightness of 6,000 nits. realme also provides a more practical number; the display can reach 1,600 nits with High Brightness Mode. The display is amply bright even outdoors under the sunlight and colors are vibrant.

The display supports a 120Hz refresh rate with 8T LTPO which helps save power by dynamically adjusting the refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz according to the content displayed. The phone also incorporates numerous eye protection features. For example, AI Eye Comfort detects eye fatigue, such as blinking and yawning frequency, and adjusts the screen color temperature to alleviate strain.

The device is equipped with a massive 5,500 mAh battery, ensuring you can easily go a day without needing to recharge. When you do need to charge, the 120W SUPERVOOC technology allows for rapid charging. Unfortunately, it does not support wireless charging, a feature that is becoming more common even on mid-range smartphones, much less flagship models.

Sustainability

realme is a company with strong sustainability initiatives. For instance, the company has committed to reducing the carbon emissions of its GT series by 30% and achieving “Double Zero” emissions by 2025. Unfortunately, when it comes to the GT 6 specifically, there is no apparent mention of sustainability efforts.

The phone feels solid in build quality, and the display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, ensuring durability. It has an IP56 rating, which ensures that it’s protected against most common accidents, though you should naturally still exercise caution. Additionally, there was no information available regarding support for security updates at the time of this review. realme promises 4 years of Android updates and 4 years of security patches, which should last you quite a bit during the lifetime of this phone.

Value

The realme GT 6 definitely has a laundry list of buzzword-worthy features, from dual 50MP cameras to, of course, AI. Its specs on paper are no joke, and its actual performance delivers much of its promises as well. Nothing surprising for what is supposed to be a flagship killer, a title that has been thrown around a lot to challenge the giants of the market. Of course, it will take more than killer features to stand up to smartphone Goliaths, and realme has one more trick up its sleeve.

Starting at only 599.99 EUR (roughly $645) for the base 8GB RAM/256GB storage model, all the way up to 799.99 EUR ($860) for the top-of-the-line 16GB/512GB configuration, the realme GT 6 definitely beats other flagships in terms of accessibility. Sure, it’s not perfect and might be missing a few flagship features like wireless charging, but you’re still getting the juicy meat of what makes a flagship a flagship without burning a hole through your wallet. It’s definitely an option worth considering, presuming it’s even available within your vicinity.

Verdict

It’s getting harder to stand out in the smartphone market these days, at least not without some groundbreaking feature or head-turning design. At the same time, however, many brands try too hard to set themselves apart, producing designs that are, to some extent, too distracting and too noisy. Fortunately, the realme GT 6 is not one of those, making it a flagship killer in more ways than one.

Yes, it has quite the repertoire of high-end features, and rarely does it disappoint except in a few small details. It also has a price tag that belies all that power, making the product accessible to more people. Last but not the least, it also goes against the flow and delivers a design that is elegant without being overbearing. The realme GT 6 bucks the trend and appeals to a new generation of the youth that’s getting wiser and more discerning, valuing essential experiences over superficial embellishments.

There are a lot of fine machines that you can get if you’re willing to spend over $100,000 these days. In fact, you can get multiple amazing cars for that amount of money, so if you’re going to choose just one car and pay over $150,000 for it, it had better be very, very good.

And that’s exactly what Audi’s RS7 promises to be. With 621 horsepower from a 4.0-liter V8 routed to all four wheels through an advanced all-wheel drive system with an active, torque-vectoring differential and an eight-speed automatic transmission, it certainly promises to be a powerhouse when it comes both to performance and all-season poise. But does it deliver, especially when optioned up to a final price of $151,840?

Design

First impressions are key with a car like this, and the RS7 doesn’t disappoint. While you can get this same basic silhouette for as little as $72,000 in the base A7, stepping up past the roughly $85,000 S7 into the RS7 you see here adds several model-specific customizations — some subtle, others less so.

To me, the most striking are those amazing 22-inch wheels. While I’m not generally a fan of black wheels, especially on a car like this, you could paint these any color you like, and they’d still be striking. The shape, which seems delicate as a spider’s web, is beautifully compelling, while the deep dish provided by that offset gives this sedan a concept-car stance.

That deep-dish profile helps fill the fenders on the RS7, which are substantially wider than those on the base A7. It’s the nose, though, that is most noticeable, with massive inlets featuring exposed carbon fiber slats. The color here, Florett Silver, is on the subtle side for a car this powerful, but it pairs beautifully with the black wheels and carbon highlights.

But what I like most about the RS7 is that, despite those details that enthusiasts will spot from a mile away, your average person out there on the streets won’t necessarily see this one coming. On a casual glance, the RS7 doesn’t shout its presence. The added bits aren’t so much flare as they are finesse, and that’s very much in line with what I want from a car.

Interior detailing

On the inside, the changes over the base A7 are similarly subtle, but there are differences. It starts with the deep-set sports seats with their distinctive hexagonal pattern. They look great, especially in Cognac leather, but if I’m honest, for a car with this much performance, I might have wanted something a bit sportier, like those offered by the $3,000 RS Design package with contrasting stitching.

The dash and doors in the RS7 receive slashes of carbon fiber, left matte, not sealed behind glossy resin like on most cars. This means it’s as lovely to touch as it is to see. Likewise, the steering wheel is Audi’s deep, thick sports shape that fits my hands like it was molded for them. A pair of discrete metal shift paddles on the back waiting for sportier drives.

Everything in here is high-quality, with the only aspects I don’t appreciate being the expanses of glossy piano black on the center console around the shifter and running across the center of the dashboard. But, from a materials and fit-and-finish standpoint, there’s nothing to complain about.

The same goes for front-seat comfort. There’s plenty of headroom and legroom, and the comprehensive heating and ventilation of those front seats will keep your posterior thermally managed. The rear seats are also heated but don’t offer anywhere near the space. As you can probably guess by that roofline, headroom out back is limited, as is legroom.

But those seats do at least fold out of the way easily, with a 40/20/40 split, meaning you can drop just the middle section should you want to seat four in here while also carrying some skis, snowboards, or the like. Just make sure the two rear passengers are somewhat short of stature.

The software experience

Audi’s MMI experience handles infotainment duties, a dual-screen system that’s comprehensive if occasionally confusing. The bottom screen is mostly used for the car’s climate control system, but occasionally, you’ll use the top screen for that.

Meanwhile, the top screen has the bulk of the infotainment experience, and you’ll find the integrated navigation system and media playback here. Connect your phone for wireless Android Auto or Apple CarPlay and either of those displays take over the top screen. Media is played through a 23-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, which offers a rich, broad sound but comes with quite an asking price: $4,900.

The gauge cluster is likewise fully digital, measuring 12.3 inches on the diagonal, and there’s a heads-up display as well, meaning you’ll not be lacking for information. All displays are thoroughly customizable and full of telemetry covering everything from maximum g-forces to tire pressures.

The most important control might just be on the steering wheel. It’s the RS button, which you can use to quickly toggle through two user-defined RS modes: RS1 and RS2. You can customize the engine response, suspension stiffness, steering resistance, engine sound, and differential setup.

Dig a little deeper, and you can also raise or lower the adaptive suspension, which I frequently had to do while driving the car.

Winter testing

My RS7 visit coincided with one of the worst ice storms we’ve experienced in New York in years. Heavy rains swept through, followed by a rapid temperature drop and a foot of heavy, wet snow. The resulting combination not only left the roads covered in ice and slick snow but also brought down trees and branches all over.

And I had to drive three hours straight into the heart of it.

Virtually any other 600-horsepower, $151,000 car would have left me, at best, stranded or, at worst, halfway through a tree. The RS7 handled it all remarkably well. Though the RS7 is low, it’s not so terminally low that the aggressive front air dam turned into a plow when the snow started to pile up.

Meanwhile, Audi’s sportiest sedan did an excellent job of getting all that power to the ground. In the few times I dug deep into the throttle (purely for the sake of experimentation), the RS7 squirmed just a bit, making the most of the grip, then shot forward in a controlled, predictable way.

This was on some of the slickest, nastiest roads I’ve ever experienced. I saw many cars in ditches, yet I had no problem getting home. I even enjoyed myself. And, on those few times when I needed to clear some particularly deep snow, raising the car an extra 0.8 inches was a reassuring thing — even if it was only a maximum speed of about 20 mph.

Much of this performance must be attributed to the Continental WinterContact tires on the car, which, despite being incredibly wide and low-profile, delivered good and predictable grip. But the RS7’s advanced differential system ensured that the power got to those tires in a balanced way and ultimately ensured that I got home safe.

Once the weather cleared and the roads dried, I had a chance to sample the car’s speed and performance differently. Here the RS7 is brutal and fast. That twin-turbo V8 sounds fantastic as it roars up through your every acceleration and burbles gently as you lose that speed again. The transmission clips through ratios without hesitation but did have a tendency to make the car jerk and stumble a bit when coasting to a stop.

The steering is delightfully quick, if a bit numb, and the grip levels are, of course, huge. For a car of this size, it’s very, very good.

Switching back to Comfort mode, the car returns to being a calm and relaxing luxury sedan. It’s really only that occasionally jerky transmission that betrays this car’s performance capability, that and an excess of road noise, which would surely be lessened with summer or all-season tires rather than the chunky winter tire treads here.

The 17.4 mpg I saw during my testing also points to this car’s capabilities, which matches the car’s official combined rating. However, according to the EPA, you can get up to 22 mpg on the highway if you drive it gently.

Pricing and Options

The 2024 Audi RS7 Performance you see here had a starting MSRP of $127,800, but included a number of options, including $7,650 for the matte carbon fiber, $4,900 for the Bang & Olufsen sound system, and $2,250 for the driver assistance package. The total price came out to $151,840 after a $1,095 destination charge.

As a machine meant to mix both luxury and performance, the RS7 handles both categories well, not providing the posh experience of something like a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but lining up quite compellingly against something like a Mercedes-AMG GT Sedan or Porsche Panamera and with a price to match.

With its visual tweaks and hints of outrageous performance, the RS7 feels a bit more special than either of those two, a bit more rare. Still, with Porsche’s new Panamera coming, and Mercedes raising the bar with the AMG GT, Audi’s barnstormer might need some new moves to keep up.

I must confess that I’m usually an in-ear monitor or earbud person, so over-the-ear headphones never really appealed to me—until the Ace. One of the biggest issues I’ve had with other over-the-ear headphones is that they’re often big and bulky. Additionally, most of them have poorly designed ear cups that don’t stay in place, so I constantly have to adjust them as they slide up and down. The Ace fixed both of these issues for me. The overall design is low profile, and the flex is just right, while the ear cups lock in place all day long, no matter what I’m doing.

The replaceable ear cushions, wrapped in vegan leather, add another layer of convenience and sustainability. If the cushions wear out over time, they can be easily swapped out, extending the life of the headphones and maintaining comfort. In order to sell more foldable phones, this niche market segment needs to be as common as regular, non-folding phones. These normal phones, however, appeal to the masses because they can cater to a wide range of buyers, including those with tighter budgets. There has long been a clamor for more affordable foldable phones, both the larger book-style design as well as the clamshell type, but few manufacturers have dared to heed the call. The nubia Flip 5G is arguably the first flip-style foldable to really bring the design to the masses, boldly claiming the title of most affordable foldable. Nothing comes for free, however, especially in this industry, so we naturally wonder what nubia had to sacrifice to meet such an unbelievably low price point. We give the nubia Flip 5G a good turn to find out.

Aesthetics

Right off the bat, you wouldn’t be able to tell the nubia Flip 5G’s price just from its looks. The word “cheap” has unfortunately acquired a negative reputation, but there is definitely nothing cheap about this phone’s design. Aside from the large black disc on its back, which we’ll get to later, the phone is a poster child for minimalist design, simple yet evocative in its pleasing appearance. There is not a line, edge, or corner out of place, making it exude class and style that would shock you if you knew the price tag it carried.

nubia didn’t skimp on materials either, giving the phone a matte AG glass for its back that not only adds a better grip but also makes the “sparkling sand” surface of the design stand out even more. This is better seen on the Cosmic Black cover which gives you the impression of looking at a starry night sky, while the Sunshine Gold of our review unit gives off a more calming and ethereal presence. The aluminum alloy frame isn’t far behind with its zircon sandblasted finish, adding texture that won’t be easily smudged by fingerprints.

Of course, the nubia Flip 5G needs to have cameras and a second screen on its back, and this is done just as tastefully as the rest of its design. The large black circle is located dead center, giving it symmetry and balance that is admittedly becoming less common in smartphone designs, foldable or otherwise. Once the screen lights up, however, that darkness becomes something like a window to another world, a technological equivalent of the porthole of old ships. This gives the phone a completely different vibe from other clamshell foldables that, while not unattractive, tend to focus more on the technical functionality at the expense of overall design.

Ergonomics

Foldable phones promise a different level of usability and flexibility, but they also demand some changes in the way we use phones. For example, we need to open them up to be able to fully utilize their functions, but the external screen also offers some interactions while the phone is closed. Being able to comfortably and confidently hold such a device in both forms is even more important with foldables than it is for regular, flat smartphones.

Fortunately, the nubia Flip 5G delivers exactly that, and in both forms no less. Holding the folded phone is the easiest thing to do with one hand, and you don’t even have to turn the block around because the external display will automatically adjust itself depending on how you’re holding it. Whether your top is bottom or your bottom is top, you can instantly dive into the notifications, controls, or the camera without having to turn it right side up.

That said, the nubia Flip 5G is admittedly taller and wider than other flip phones, so those with smaller hands might have even more difficulty using it with a single hand. The flat, textured edges help with the grip, but reaching for the other side of the screen with your thumb will still be a tedious task. Then again, most phones these days really take single-handed use for granted, so it’s not exactly alone in this area.

Performance

So far, the nubia Flip 5G seems to punch above its price when it comes to design and comfort, so it raises the question of how the brand was able to push that price tag so low. The answer, if you haven’t guessed it already, is in the hardware. It’s not terrible, mind you, but you would do well to manage your expectations that this isn’t a $1,000 phone.

If you were to really put the flip phone in a box, you would file it under the “mid-range” category. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor it uses is from way back in 2022, and its 8GB of RAM sounds almost meager. Fortunately, this combination has enough silicon muscle to drive a fluid and responsive user experience (especially if you boost the RAM by 12GB by taking away some internal storage space), so you might not even notice the difference. Yes, games need to be set to medium or lower, and certain activities will really raise the temperatures, but there are no show-stopping flaws that would make you throw the phone in frustration.

Even better, the 6.9-inch 120Hz OLED foldable display is actually impressive in its brightness and performance. You’ll have to fiddle with the refresh rate settings to get the right speed you want, but the screen is no joke when it comes to responsiveness and colors. Thanks to the phone’s hinge design, you’ll hardly see the crease unless you intentionally go looking for it. Your finger with definitely feel its existence, but you’ll barely notice it in day-to-day operations. The 1.43-inch circular OLED screen on the back shares these same properties, minus the flexibility, but its small size looks odd when placed side-by-side with other flip phones. At the same time, however, this allows nubia to craft simpler, more beautiful, and less distracting experiences rather than giving you another phone on the back of your phone.

In addition to older hardware, the nubia Flip 5G also runs MyOS 13 which is based on, you guessed it, Android 13. We’re past the time when new devices would come out with old Android versions, so this comes as a bit of a surprise. In 6 months, Android 15 will also be out, making this version very old in terms of features and bug fixes. What makes the situation a little worse is that we’re not confident about nubia’s track record in pushing timely updates, so new owners of this foldable phone might be stuck with the same Android version for a long time.

Battery life is a bit of a mixed bag. On paper, its 4,310mAh capacity is definitely the highest in this foldable category, but the older technology of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is less battery-efficient, so it all evens out at the end. The 33W charging speed, however, makes up for its short battery life, letting you get as much as a 50% charge in just 15 minutes. In other words, you’ll still be charging almost every night, despite having a bigger battery capacity.

nubia’s cost-cutting strategy, however, really shows when it comes to the cameras. The 16MP front-facing camera is serviceable and takes OK selfies, but for all intents and purposes, you’ll probably end up using the main 50MP camera even for the latter. There are two sensors on the back of the nubia Flip 5G, but you can actively use only one of them as the 2MP camera is really just a depth sensor. That means you’ll be relying on that lone 50MP shooter for everything, including a 2x lossless digital zoom. And yes, there is no ultra-wide camera at all.

While megapixel count isn’t always everything, it still matters when that’s all you really have. In practice, the nubia Flip 5G’s lone camera is like a hero, doing everything to the best of its abilities, even when it sometimes fails. Images are passable and at least have enough details to make the mark. Colors, however, can sometimes look a bit washed out or dull, and there is a clear loss of detail when you zoom in. There’s no OIS, so you’ll have to make sure your subject stays still for a second or two. On the upside, this rear camera takes great portrait photos with pleasing blurs and correct separation of subject and background. With so many smartphones boasting impressive photography chops, the nubia Flip 5G sadly comes up glaringly short of expectations. Then again, it’s not exactly that shocking given how much you’re paying for it anyway.

Sustainability

Compared to regular phones, foldable phones are still infants, and some brands are just as new to playing this game. In that sense, it’s really not surprising that using more sustainable materials is probably the farthest from their minds at this point. They first want to establish the durability and reliability of their design before they change the formula to boast about the use of recycled plastics and metal. The nubia Flip 5G is no different in this regard.

That said, it naturally takes the topic of durability very seriously, even if it doesn’t make any guarantees about even being splash-proof, let alone waterproof and dustproof. The waterdrop-style hinge that allows it to fold completely flat does come with the claim of having withstood more than 200,000 folding and unfolding actions. There is a bit of a crunching sound when opening and folding the phone, though, but that’s probably more from how rigid the hinge is rather than anything breaking inside.

Value

If this were a regular smartphone, we’d consider it pretty basic to the point of being disappointing and leave it at that. But the nubia Flip 5G isn’t your regular smartphone, not by a long shot. It’s hardly the first clamshell-style foldable phone either, but it’s definitely the most affordable one in this specific category. It starts at $499 for 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, but $699 will get you double that memory. When you consider that something like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 starts at $1,000, then it’s really no contest.

That said, nubia’s real competition would come from its peers, like the TECNO Phantom V Flip launched last year. Yes, the $600 price tag puts it above the nubia Flip 5G, but it also comes with some important upgrades, like a more recent processor, faster charging, and more importantly, a better camera system that includes an ultra-wide shooter. It all boils down to how much you’re willing to cut out for a basic foldable experience, and you might be surprised at how much the nubia Flip 5G is able to deliver for less.

Verdict

Foldable phones are here to stay, though it’s taking quite some time for them to become the norm. Part of it is because of consumer hesitation regarding seemingly fragile devices, but an even bigger factor is the price attached to such products that may easily break from the slightest accident. Offering an affordable yet decent foldable phone goes a long way in allaying fears, and the nubia Flip 5G is the commendable hero that is bravely paving the way for others like it.

The $499 price tag for a foldable phone is nothing short of tempting, but it also raises questions about what corners were cut to get there. The camera story is definitely disappointing, as is the use of somewhat older hardware and software. None of these, however, take away from the truth that the nubia Flip 5G is a surprisingly decent foldable smartphone for its price. If you want to sink your teeth into this still-young device category but are too reluctant to spend too much on it, the nubia Flip 5G is definitely a great way to get started, as long as you set your expectations right.

Govee might very well be changing that perception with its new Floor Lamp Pro which not only brings pro-level features deserving of its name but also looks quite sleek and elegant standing anywhere in the room, even when all its lights are turned off.

Aesthetics

Govee has dozens of designs for different kinds of lighting solutions, but if there’s one trait they share it’s that they shine best when the lights are on, figuratively and literally. When they’re off, they tend to look unimpressive, at least for those that aren’t hidden behind TVs or stuck to wall corners. Floor lamps, however, are always visible and are, therefore, designed to be seen. Fortunately, the Govee Floor Lamp Pro is something that you’ll love seeing even if there’s no light show taking place.

Available in black and gray color options, the Govee Floor Lamp Pro’s dark silhouette cuts a rather striking figure whether it’s standing in a corner or placed somewhere in the middle of the room. The floor lamp’s shape is pretty simple: a tall, thin rod standing on top of a cylindrical base. On closer inspection, you will realize that the rod is made of sturdy aluminum that slightly wraps around a white silicone LED light strip. You’ll hardly see this color contrast unless you intentionally turn the light strip into view, which is actually easy to do since you can rotate the rod 360 degrees.

The can-shaped base is covered with a fabric-like material reminiscent of those found wrapped around smart speakers. That association isn’t by accident as the Floor Lamp Pro, unlike Govee’s other lights, actually comes with a built-in Bluetooth speaker. This makes the product an all-in-one light and sound system, one of the extremely few floor lamps with such a feature. The bottom of the base itself isn’t covered by this soft material as it exposes the base’s own RGB lights, yet another defining feature of this new Govee Floor Lamp Pro.

Although you can expect the Govee Floor Lamp Pro to be a dazzling sight once the psychedelic lights start to dance, what sets this design apart is how it still catches your eyes once the show is over. Unless you’re familiar with these kinds of RGB floor lamps, you might actually mistake it as some modern design object meant to add some minimalist elegance to your room. This pretty much means that the Floor Lamp Pro provides value all the time, even when you’re not actively using its bright lights.

Ergonomics

Just like any Govee product, setting up the Floor Lamp Pro is practically a breeze. Given the rod’s 67-inch height, you shouldn’t be surprised that it comes in four pieces that you can quickly join and screw together in a snap. You slip in the silicone light strip and install the rod into the base, easily connecting the wires to finally finish the process. It can be done in around 10 minutes, depending on how well-versed you are at assembling things.

You won’t be handling the Govee Floor Lamp Pro most of the time, at least not directly, which is probably for the best. After all, it’s meant to stand in a corner of the room and stay there until the next time you redecorate. And even when you do need to control it, you won’t be able to do it on the lamp itself anyway because it lacks any form of physical control. Instead, you will be operating the lamp remotely, mostly through your smartphone.

Surprisingly, Govee ships a remote control with the Floor Lamp Pro, which gives you quick and instant access to some of the most basic and important functions. Instead of fiddling with the app to turn down the volume, you can simply press down the button on the remote to save you the trouble and the stress. And to make sure you don’t lose that small remote, you can magnetically stick it to the lamp’s metal rod until you next need its services.

The Govee Floor Lamp Pro isn’t exactly lightweight at 7.3lbs (3.3kg), but that’s fine since you’re unlikely to move it around anyway. One trick that it does have is that you can turn the rod around, making it trivial to customize the lighting experience from bouncing off walls to directly shining the light in your direction. All in all, this Govee product is just as easy to set up just like its siblings, though there is definitely some assembly required. Operating it is also straightforward, though the Govee Home app can admittedly be a bit daunting and overwhelming for first-time users, but that is mostly because of the plethora of features available for such a simple-looking product.

Performance

When you first turn on the Govee Floor Lamp Pro, you might actually be blinded by how bright the LED lights are. It is to be expected from a flagship Govee product, but this one definitely takes it up a notch with a 2,100 ANSI lumens brightness. Govee didn’t skimp on the LED beads either. The light strip, for example, has 162 RGB units and 162 white units, while the base has 30 RGB beads and 30 white beads.

What all these numbers mean in practice is that you have a bright and unbroken beam of light wherever the Floor Lamp Pro shines. You won’t see any distinct cuts or patterns on the projected light thanks to the high density of LED beads distributed along the length of the light strip. And thanks to Govee’s RGBICWW technology, your eyes are treated to the widest range of colors, turning every moment a psychedelic experience.

The Govee Floor Lamp Pro, however, doesn’t stop there. As mentioned earlier, this is one of the extremely few floor lamps to bear a speaker inside. And not just any speaker, mind you, but a Bluetooth speaker system with two full-range and one low-frequency speaker inside. What would normally be a captivating light show becomes an immersive multimedia experience that dances to the beat of your music or even your film. That speaker, though loud, won’t exactly blow your mind with its quality. It’s decent enough for small parties and enhancing the mood of a film or soundtrack, but it isn’t going to win any awards, especially against actual speakers from audio brands.

The Floor Lamp Pro has the ability to sync its lights to music like a magical light and sound show. It can use either the built-in mic to listen to the sounds around it or, better yet, the built-in Bluetooth speaker playing your own tunes streaming from your phone. With Govee DreamView, you can even sync other Govee lights so they all dance to the same beat, whether they’re in the same room or scattered throughout the house. This Music Mode is just one of the many features you can access from the Govee Home app, of course, and there are literally a dozen others you can pick out to set the right mood at the right time, from scheduled activation to scenes for different holidays. You can even enjoy 29 preset white noise sounds to calm you down and help you focus, though not everyone might like the available selection. Fortunately, you can always use your own relaxing notes thanks to the lamp’s speaker.

As a smart lamp, you have a variety of ways you can control the lamp, though what you’ve heard so far requires your fingers to tap your way through menus and options. You can also use your voice thanks to integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Unfortunately, the Govee Floor Lamp Pro doesn’t yet support the new Matter standard that would open up compatibility with other smart home platforms and devices. That will eventually come, but there’s no timeline yet for its arrival.

Sustainability

The Govee Floor Lamp Pro is an exceptional smart lighting product, but it isn’t that too different from other brands when it comes to the materials it uses. There’s plenty of plastic to go around, especially with the silicone light strip. That said, the Floor Lamp Pro is a little unique in its use of slightly more sustainable materials like the aluminum rod and fabric-like cover for the base.

Any damage, however, would require sending the product back for repairs, which is thankfully a straightforward and painless process. It’d be impossible to repair the light strip on your own, at least not without extensive electronics experience, though you might get by with a few dents and knicks on the metal rod. Hopefully, as Govee’s business grows, so will its efforts in sustainability in order to secure a brighter future for its customers.

Value

Truth be told, a floor lamp is a harder sell compared to products like string or strip lights. The latter are more general-purpose and more flexible as they can be used in almost any situation or design. That said, they also don’t have a big effect when it comes to coloring an entire space, at least not without investing in longer strips. Not only is that not economical, it’s not very efficient either.

The Govee Floor Lamp Pro has the power to really change the atmosphere inside a space. Whether it’s bouncing off walls or shining directly, the bright and colorful lights can easily reach across the room. The magic, however, really happens when you start pairing those lights with sounds coming from the lamp’s own speaker. Best of all, it remains just as captivating as a decorative design when it’s not in use. For a floor lamp that costs $219.99, that’s quite a steal.

Verdict

Smart floor lamps are still a pretty niche market, and it might be difficult to justify one or two if you’re not a gamer or a die-hard room modder. Of course, these aren’t the only audiences that these lights serve, but most people probably can’t imagine what they’d want a vertical stick of light for. With the Floor Lamp Pro, however, Govee is pushing the envelope of what floor lamps are capable of and trying to break the mold with a smart lighting solution that can instantly change the ambiance of a room in a cost-efficient and space-saving manner.

The configurable and bright RGB lights are already impressive, but their ability to sync with the music playing from the lamp’s built-in speakers really takes the immersion up a notch. The wide variety of modes and features enables you to almost literally paint a different picture of your room every time, whether you’re having a lively party or trying to focus on work. The Govee Floor Lamp Pro’s value, however, doesn’t end when the lights go off and the music stops. With a sleek minimalist design and quality materials, it becomes a design object that adds a different kind of aesthetic, one that can speak loudly with fewer words and without the dazzling lights.
