Teenage Engineering has become an inseparable part of the music community in the past decade. Ever since their OP-1 synth debuted on Swedish House Mafia’s music video for their song ‘One’, the company has been on a rise, launching Pocket Operators, recording/playback gear, turntables for children, and even venturing into phones for Nothing and the R1 AI device for Rabbit. Their position in the new-age music industry, however, remains cemented for the next few years to come – but if there’s one device missing from their music-making tech repertoire, it’s a great DJ console. While most people love making music, there’s a case to be made that if you want to connect with your listeners, you need to perform your music too – and deejay consoles help artists do just that. Designed to bridge this product gap, Chris Matthews designed the OP-J, a Teenage Engineering-inspired console for disc jockeys looking to play and remix tunes.

Designer: Chris Matthews

Deejay consoles don’t really need to be portable, but there’s an understated beauty to how sleek the OP-J is. It’s about as thick as its synthesizer sibling, with the same design language running through. You’ve got two rotating discs, knobs, keys, buttons, cross-faders, a speaker, and two screens that guide you through playback as well as effect settings.

Keeping in theme with the company’s focus on music creation, the OP-J allows you to do more than just play and merge tracks. Sure, it’s a pretty capable DJ console, with everything a disc jockey would need to get on stage and drop the bass… but you’ve got 8 keys and 8 more buttons to record/trigger loops, play melodies, or activate certain intros/outros to spice up your songs. Although it isn’t shown here, I wouldn’t be surprised if you could hook the OP-1 to the setup and take your performance to even higher levels.

Color-coded knobs let you control effects and envelopes, while a dedicated display just for the effects lets you monitor what you’re up to. It’s unusual for a DJ console to come with its own speaker, but just in case you want to practice in the privacy of your home or hotel room, the OP-J lets you nerd out without needing a separate speaker system. Yes, audio jacks on the bottom let you hook external speakers if you can, or headphones so you can preview tracks before cueing them.

The OP-J is just a fan-made concept for now, but if someone from Teenage Engineering reads this, we all could use an OP-style deejay console! Besides, let’s also take some time out to appreciate the Darth Vader-esque black and red version below?!

Pet getting scared of 4th July fireworks? These quirky yet effective Dog Headphones with ANC can help

]]>

Fourth of July can be a really fun time for the entire country, but a very stressful time for pet parents who have to deal with the extreme anxiety that dogs feel around those loud bangs and other noises. Dogs are highly sensitive to sound, so any loud noises, be it the pop of a firework or even the bang of a thunderstorm, can cause them high amounts of stress. Kirsten Brand nearly lost her dog Emma when a firework show on the 4th of July caused the pet to get so scared that she ran away from home. “After what seemed like hours, we found my furbaby, Emma, down the street. Thankfully, she had been taken into a garage by a neighbor, to ride out the rest of the firework show,” Kirsten mentioned.

That prompted her to design the Pawnix, a pet ‘helmet’ that covers their ears to dampen loud noises, while also playing calming and soothing sounds via Bluetooth. Sort of like ANC Headphones but for dogs, the Pawnix keeps your pets calm with relaxing audio, while also wrapping around their head to make them feel a sense of physical security and comfort.

Designer: Pawnix

Improved over various iterations, the Pawnix now comes with a foam-padded neoprene design, similar to the laptop sleeves you usually see people carry their MacBooks in. The helmet, shaped to look almost like a bonnet for your pet, wraps around the dog’s head, with pockets for the ears to fit in. The design works equally well for dogs with all kinds of ears, whether they’re erect, semi-erect, or hanging down. 4-way stretch Anti-microbial fabric with durable stitching means the Pawnix can go without being washed, and can definitely endure your dog trying to scratch at it or take it off.

On the inside, a set of audio drivers with active noise canceling and Bluetooth 5.0 let your dog listen to calming soundscapes instead of loud noises. Pop the headphones on, and you can connect your phone to the Pawnix via Bluetooth, choosing from a variety of calming sounds (you can actually find dog-calming tracks on YouTube). Alternatively, just the Pawnix itself should be able to drown out less intense noises like a dinner party with loud music. The Pawnix comes in 4 colors, and 4 sizes too, although there’s also an option to custom-make a Pawnix for even larger dogs.

The world’s favorite merc got himself some merch!

A perfect accessory to have around you to celebrate the release of what could be the most highly anticipated Marvel movie since Endgame, these TWS earbuds come literally shaped to look like Deadpool’s mask. Designed by the folks at boAt Lifestyle, the Immortal 121 earbuds (that’s a fun name) have cutting-edge features bundled in a package that just costs Rs. 1699 INR ($20.35 USD). You’re looking at 40 hours of playback (with the charging case), 40 milliseconds of latency, Bluetooth 5.3, adjustable EQ, IPx4 water resistance, and a game-changing 10-minute charging time so you’re never out of energy… just like the overtly verbose hitman in red.

The Immortal 121 launched back in December 2023, but only recently saw a Deadpool-specific edition. The design for the most part remains unchanged, but call it a coincidence that the earbuds case lends itself perfectly to the shape of the Deadpool mask. In fact, the two black eye patches are actually transparent tinted too, letting you somewhat peek into the case to see the earbuds.

The TWS earbuds themselves are exceptional for their price point, especially coming from India’s largest audio hardware company. 10mm drivers deliver a frequency range of 20Hz-20,000Hz, while touch-sensitive sides let you control music playback, volume, and answer/reject calls. The earphones themselves deliver 180 minutes of listening time, while the case brings that up to 40 hours. boAt’s ASAP™ Charge feature lets you enable 10-minute fast-charging when you’re in a rush. With the ASAP™ Charge disabled, the case will take 1.5 hours to charge from 0 to 100, helping conserve battery health in the process.

Other features on the Immortal 121 include boAt’s Beast Mode, which gives the earbuds 40ms of latency for wireless audio while gaming. The earbuds come with adjustable EQ, quad mics for clear voice calls, ENx™ or environmental noise cancellation, and a feature every gamer will love, LEDs that glow to make the case come to life!

All that in a $20 pair of TWS earbuds is highly impressive… and that ISN’T including the fact that the case literally looks like Deadpool’s mask. The boAt Immortal 121 Deadpool Edition rings in the upcoming Deadpool vs. Wolverine movie that launches on the 26th of this month. boAt sells a Hulk edition of the Immortal 121 too, but that honestly doesn’t feel as perfect as this match made in heaven!

Nocs Design is known for its intricately crafted audio accessories that hone minimalism. Purely focused on the acoustic signature and the build quality, the Sweden-based studio has revealed its new wireless speaker as a follow-up to the popular hand-crafted Monolith speaker.

This is the Nocs Monolith Aluminium speaker designed for audiophiles who give high weightage to minimalism in their lifestyle. The material choice for this wireless speaker is a deep research exercise for eliminating recycled plastics. According to Founder Daniel Alms, the result is a single block of aluminum CNC machined to achieve a classy look. Most of all the speaker is fully recyclable, making it the ideal choice when it comes to sustainability that the brand is highly conscious of.

Designer: Nocs Design

According to Daniel, a lot of time and effort was put into crafting the perfect symmetry for driver positioning inside the anodized aluminum housing. Unlike any other product design, minimalism isn’t just a fancy word here. Nocs refrains from using any logos, highlighting the sleek appearance of the solid aluminum form. This speaker is well positioned in the lineup, right between the Mini and the Monolith. To top it all, the ‘cradle-to-cradle consumer product’ is fully repairable and boasts easily replaceable parts.

Those grilles lie just above the five drivers are precisely positioned to deliver a rich and wide sound in any room. Alm has tuned the sound signature in collaboration with musicians and DJs which speaks highly about the speaker’s capability when it comes to satisfying audiophiles. The idea behind this distinction is to foster a “deep connection between the artist and the audience.”

Nocs Monolith Aluminium speaker is all set to be delivered to interested buyers in November 2024. Along with the classic aluminum option, you can also choose the more muted yet classy matte black finish. The price tag of $1,000 is on the steeper side but it’s all worth for purists who known what Nocs stands for.

Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 is my go-to everyday carry (EDC). At Yanko Design, we typically think of EDC items as tools like a knife, screwdriver, or flashlight—all rolled into one neat package. However, for those of us who need great audio for music, conference calls, and more, the AirPods Pro 2 are perfect. Their design is sleek and compact, fitting comfortably in the ear with different ear tip sizes to get the right fit. The charging case is genius—small enough to slip into the coin pocket of your jeans, making it super easy to carry around.

Designer: Apple

I gave my AirPods Pro to my 11-year-old, thinking I could get by with other brands of earbuds or headsets. That was a big mistake. Nothing else matched the seamless experience of switching between my iPhone, iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air. The AirPods Pro just work, no fuss.

With the new H2 chip, the sound quality is top-notch. Enhanced Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency modes let you dive into your music or stay aware of your surroundings. The Adaptive Transparency mode even adjusts to loud noises on the fly. Plus, the battery life is impressive—up to six hours with ANC on and up to 30 hours with the charging case. No more constant recharges.

AirPods Pro 2: H2 Chip + custom-built driver and amplifier

The Personalized Spatial Audio feature, with dynamic head tracking, makes listening feel unique to you. The new touch controls on the stems are super handy for adjusting the volume on the go. Thanks to their stealth design, one could even use them as earplugs for sleeping on an airplane. I enjoy doing yard work, so they work amazingly well at blocking out the loud sound of a lawnmower and weed wackers.

I missed my AirPods Pro so much that I took them back, ordered a new pair for my kid, and snagged them at 20% off on Amazon. They’re just that good.

For anyone in the Apple ecosystem, it’s tough to recommend anything else. The seamless integration, amazing sound quality, and smart design make them an essential part of daily life. These little gems combine functionality, style, and tech into one awesome package.

Looking Forward to What’s Next

At WWDC 2024, Apple announced exciting updates for the AirPods lineup, aiming to make them even better for daily use and gaming. One cool new feature is interacting with Siri using head movements. Exclusive to AirPods Pro, you can nod or shake your head to answer or dismiss calls, manage notifications, and interact with messages silently. The H2 chip’s machine learning makes this hands-free experience seamless.

AirPods Pro also got a voice isolation upgrade. This tech reduces background noise during calls, making sure your voice comes through clearly, even in noisy or windy places. Apple introduced a new API for game developers to optimize games for AirPods. This means better dynamic head tracking and reduced audio latency, making the gaming experience on Apple devices more immersive. Latency is way down, making these earbuds great for gaming. AirPods Pro, paired with the iPhone 15 Pro Max, offers Apple’s best wireless audio latency ever for mobile gaming.

With support for 16-bit, 48kHz audio in games, your voice will come through crystal clear to teammates and other players. Perfect for those intense multiplayer sessions. These updates show Apple’s drive to make AirPods even better. The new features and enhancements will be available as a free firmware update this fall, with the developer beta available now for Apple Developer Program members.

Why Choose the AirPods Pro 2 Over the Original AirPods Pro and Regular AirPods?

On this Mobile Monday, we’re focusing on the AirPods Pro 2, and here’s why they stand out compared to the original AirPods Pro and regular AirPods. When it comes to wireless earbuds, Apple’s AirPods lineup offers several options, but the AirPods Pro 2 is the clear choice for several compelling reasons.

First, the AirPods Pro 2 feature the new H2 chip, which significantly enhances audio performance. The sound quality is richer and more immersive, with deeper bass and clearer highs. This is a noticeable improvement over both the original AirPods Pro and the regular AirPods, making your music, podcasts, and calls sound better than ever.

While the original AirPods Pro introduced Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), the AirPods Pro 2 took it to the next level. Enhanced ANC means you can block out more ambient noise, allowing for a more focused listening experience. The new Adaptive Transparency mode also dynamically adjusts to sudden loud noises, protecting your ears while still letting you stay aware of your surroundings.

Battery life is crucial for wireless earbuds, and the AirPods Pro 2 delivers. With ANC enabled, they offer up to six hours of listening time, and the charging case extends this to up to 30 hours. This is a significant improvement over the original AirPods Pro and regular AirPods, which means less frequent charging and more time enjoying your audio.

One of the standout features of the AirPods Pro 2 is Personalized Spatial Audio. This technology tailors the audio experience to the unique shape of your ears, providing an immersive, theater-like sound. Combined with dynamic head tracking, it creates a more engaging and personalized listening experience, which is a step up from what the original AirPods Pro and regular AirPods offer.

The AirPods Pro 2 supports Bluetooth 5.3, ensuring a more stable and efficient connection with your devices. The new touch controls on the stems are intuitive and allow you to adjust volume with a simple swipe, making them easier to use on the go compared to the original AirPods Pro and regular AirPods.

The AirPods Pro 2 comes with additional ear tip sizes, ensuring a more customized fit for a wider range of users. This improves both comfort and the effectiveness of noise cancellation. The regular AirPods, with their one-size-fits-all design, can’t match this level of personalized fit.

With updates announced at WWDC 2024, the AirPods Pro 2 is set to receive even more features that enhance usability. From head movement-based Siri interactions to improved voice isolation for clearer calls, these upcoming updates make the AirPods Pro 2 a future-proof investment.

Nothing as a transparent brand reflects its vision in the see-through aesthetics of each of its offerings. The intricate working of the tech is visible, highlighting the beauty of simplicity which has resonated with many fans of the Carl Pei. They’ve focused on audio products, mainly earbuds with an official pair of headphones not far from fruition.

The inspirational transparent design of their phone and earbuds has captured the imagination of designers who’ve mustered up their thoughts on presenting what a pair of Nothing headphones would look and feel like. Case in point, the concept AIAIAI Headphones, Headset 1 and head (1). Now yet another concept pair dubbed Head.Phone (1) caught my attention for all the right reasons.

Designer: Niloy Lahiri

Where this concept design sets itself apart from those other iterations is the smart use of the Glyph interface in the headphones. It’s more aggressive looking with physically moving Glyphs that can be customized to send cool messages to the on-lookers. The texture is very nice, something that Nothing would love. The color and finish of the materials are impressive with detailing in the right places. Transparent design elements flow down to the headbands which give it the typical DNA of the brand.

The ANC, transparency and normal modes can be toggled from the physical glyph interface. The ANC mode is represented by the closing Glyph lights, while transparency has a more open representation. This way, anyone talking to you can visually understand whether you are open to conversations or just in your zone, preferring not to be disturbed. Features and specifications apart from these over-the-ear headphones will freshen up the otherwise predictable market led by consumer-centric options from Sony, Apple, Sennheiser and Bose.

Although the designer didn’t intend to create a pair that is inspired by the Teenage Engineering elements, this concept has telltale good looks. So why wear a pair that seems more or less contemporary, when you could (in the future) get the option to sport a one from Nothing?

Choosing IEMs over TWS earbuds is a no brainer if you appreciate the good things in life. Campfire Audio has stood out amongst the sea of IEMs that promise reference-like sound signature. The premium audio company has won the trust of professional music creators with successful products like the Fathom and Andromeda. Now they have yet another IEM to reinstate their top position.

This striking in-ear monitor called Moon Rover is a limited edition creation that levels up the audio performance and design to become the prized collection of audiophiles. Only 888 units will be created of the Moon Rover, so you better gets your hands on them. The monitors are priced at a mind-numbing $1199 making them a choice for avid listeners with fat-pockets.

Designer: Campfire Audio

The brand claims that the pair has a neutral and analytical sound signature that’s better than any of their current IEMs. Moon Rover is identified by its crystal clear sound and wide soundstage, with exciting upper frequency, a balanced mid delivery and a punchy low end. This is made possible with a newly developed 12mm magnetic planar dynamic driver that has a fast delivery for peppy sonic sound. So, you can expect it to outperform the competition when it comes to playing hard rock or club beats.

Design of the IEM is not understated either in the shape of a hand-crafted, encased titanium shell that’s flame-treated for a distinct look. The awesomeness doesn’t stop there as they have a PVD steel spout and gold-plated screws. The namesake comes courtesy of the shell having a cosmic theme drenched in hues of blue, purple and yellow that change color depending on the amount of light falling on them. The monitors are bundled with a 3.5mm cable, silicone eartips (small, medium and large foam size) and waxed leather case.

]]>

Wireless speakers are ubiquitous thanks to multiple reasons playing in their favor: size, portability, and looks. Despite their size, portable Bluetooth speakers are now capable of reproducing sound that’s as accurate as those bulky and space-consuming ones in the past. These speakers are narrower, smaller, and slimmer, and many companies/designers are making them more versatile by toiling with their utility.

A case in point is the WhirlWave, a Bluetooth speaker designed to let the user control produced sound direction by rotating the speaker bar in the center. Made for those who crave a truly immersive experience not possible with the speakers configured to produce sound one-way, the WhirlWave can allow the user(s) to enjoy an acoustically complete three-dimensional experience.

Designer: Semin Park

Like most of the other speakers designed for one-way sound, Park thought of working on a speaker that would not limit the delivery of sound because of the design. The WhirlWave born from this ideology allows the user to have full control over the direction of the sound. The rotating speaker arm in the center can swivel like the hands of a clock from a cross orientation to 12 o’clock position.

When the speaker system is aligned as a cross, the three speakers – two on each end of the horizontal bar, and one at the bottom of the vertical support bar – spread the sound around for an immersive surround sound experience. As soon as you align the speaker’s horizontal bar vertically to the already existing support bar, you get the three speakers firing in a straight line for a more personalized sound experience.

The WhirlWave speaker features Bluetooth and power buttons on the back. Just below lies the USB-C Type charging slot, which allows juicing up the speaker using fast charging. What you can play with this Bluetooth speaker is not limited to what you play on a connected mobile device. Interestingly, the speaker is integrated with support for Apple Music, Spotify and other streaming apps. The top panel display of the speaker displays the streaming service currently playing. The display can also double as a digital clock for the bedside.

From JBL’s latest Live 3 collection to a Nothing-inspired resurrected iPod – there’s an ideal audio device in here for everyone!

1. Pony Project

Called the Pony Project, this portable CD player concept with a built-in speaker takes inspiration from two amazing brands – Sony and Teenage Engineering. The conceptual audio design has the design DNA and color theme of Teenage Engineering. It features a digital display that showcases the music it is currently playing, and library elements to look for different tricks. In fact, even the tactile input for the L-Shift, R-Shift, Mic, Start, and Select is inspired by the Teenage Engineering aesthetics.

Why is it noteworthy?

The top of the Pony Project is equipped with volume rockers, bass, and treble, as well as power and stop buttons. The audio player also features the ‘Pony’ branding which seems to be an interesting dupe of the Sony brand name. Teenage Engineering’s popular color theme was also borrowed for the design.

What we like

 • Gives a refreshing and fun makeover to DAPs
 • Merges Sony & TE design language

What we dislike

 • It is a conceptual design, so not sure how well it will translate into a real product

2. Wall Hanging CD Cover Player

Say hello to the Wall Hanging CD Cover Player – a minimal and good-looking CD player with a refreshing retro design that creates a unique and distinctive listening experience for you. It integrates the beauty of visual art to create a player that showcases the CD jacket of your favorite CDs by placing them inside the specially designed pocket.

Why is it noteworthy?

What makes the Wall Hanging CD Cover Player so unique, is that showcasing this CD player equates to physically displaying digital album art. It also lets you show off the fact that you have your own physical original CD!

What we like

 • Features a portable and easy-to-carry design, while showcasing a 40mm full-range speaker and woofer unit
 • Equipped with a 1800mAh battery that can facilitate 7-8 hours of listening

What we dislike

 • The CD cover player only supports an analog style of audio listening, you cannot use it with any digital medium

3. Black Wheel

Named the Black Wheel, this innovative audio design is the latest version of the Wheel design by Miniot. It cleverly hides the electronic and mechanical components underneath the record, this places the different parts within a thin circular body, which is hidden the instant you put a record on it.

Why is it noteworthy?

The Black Wheel creates an illusion that becomes more visible as it stands upright. The audio design has a minimalist and appealing charm to it even when placed horizontally. It is equipped with a unique control system that can’t be seen but can be felt.

What we like

 • Equipped with a thin body, which doesn’t impact the audio quality at all

What we dislike

 • The Black Wheel features an old-fashioned charm which may not be liked by those with modern looks

4. TakeOut

Called TakeOut, this LG-inspired concept is a modular speaker system that allows you to build your own audio space. It features a 360-degree soundbar which brings the sound to you no matter where you are standing or sitting in the room. The soundbar blasts music in all directions.

Why is it noteworthy?

If you push one of the circles on the soundbar, a short cylindrical wireless speaker is released. This speaker works in cohesion with the soundbar, and you can take it anywhere in the house with you! It has a compact and portable design.

What we like

 • You can build a surround sound setup by placing the four “sub-speakers” around the room

What we dislike

 • Unsure if the individual speakers can be used separately from the soundbar, or if they’re completely dependent on them

5. Battery-Free Amplifying iSpeakers

Dubbed the Battery-Free Amplifying Speakers – this iPhone speaker is portable and battery-free. It is a refreshing new version of the typical no-power smartphone speaker. At Computex 2024 Fractal Design has unveiled its first-ever gaming chair and pair of headphones that should have you interested. There’s a belief around the tech community that the best gaming chair isn’t a pure gaming chair – thus, your quest for the endgame chair for playing games should end at the Refine.

Keeping things to the basics with ergonomic comfort and intuitive controls at the helm, the Refine gaming chair brings the assuring comfort of high-end office chairs to the fore. According to Fractal Design, the gaming chair has mesh fabric and Alcantara finishes to get you through long gaming sessions without any discomfort. Refine is going to be available this summer in five different variants – ranging from $550 up to $890.

Designer: Fractal Design

Secretlab fans will write off this one just at first glance since the chair seems to be from the Herman Miller clan. But there are subtle design distinctions that will entice gamers into buying this one. The tall mesh seatback (Fractal is also offering a variant with solid padded fabric) and the ergonomic freedom of an office chair (something I love) are a good fusion of both worlds.

There is adjustable lower back support, supportive head cushion, impressive lumbar support and 4D armrests with a four-point adjustment system. This gives the user freedom to adjust the forward/back position and height rotation too. For maximum body comfort, Refine can be tilted and locked in 13 different positions. The mesh version will cost $550 and the most premium Alcantra variant will set you back $890.

Talking of the Scape headphones, the USP is the included wireless charging stand. Quality of life features such as flip-to-mute microphone that’s detachable should tilt the buying decision in the brand’s favor that’s if they manage to provide quality audio drivers and decent battery life of around 30 hours. Although the details of the drivers is not known, Fractal confirms the over-ear headset supports Bluetooth 5.3 and connectivity via a low-latency dongle. The headphones will come with ambient lighting and audio presets that can be tweaked. The audio accessory will be available later this year in two color options for $200.
