Casio has partnered with UNO to create a one-of-a-kind timepiece that merges the nostalgia of both brands. This collaboration brings together the vintage A168 watch with the playful and colorful elements of the iconic card game UNO. The result is a watch that’s both a stylish accessory and a tribute to a beloved game that has entertained families and friends for decades.

Designer: Casio x UNO

Known for its reliable and affordable watches and the classic card game that has been a household staple since 1971, both brands emerged in the 1970s and have since built a loyal global following. This collaboration celebrates the enduring popularity of these two brands by integrating the playful spirit of the card game with the timeless design and functionality of the watch.

UNO collaboration model Vintage: A168WEUC-1A

Created by Merle Robbins in 1971, the card game has become one of the most popular worldwide. The game is simple yet engaging, where players match cards by color or number, aiming to be the first to play all their cards. The game’s excitement is amplified by special cards like the Wild Card, which allows players to change the current color, adding an element of strategy and unpredictability. Over the years, the game has evolved with various themed editions and special rules, but its core appeal remains unchanged: bringing people together through fun and friendly competition.

Watch face design with classic UNO motif

This watch collaboration captures attention with its incorporation of vibrant and iconic colors. The face is adorned with the distinctive hues of the Wild Card—red, blue, yellow, and green. These colors are strategically placed around the digital display, creating a visually engaging and nostalgic look. The case is finished in gunmetal gray ion plating, offering a sleek and modern aesthetic. The black ion-plated stainless steel band complements the case, adding a touch of sophistication to the playful design.

EL backlight

One of the most captivating elements is the electroluminescent (EL) backlight. It reveals the word “Wild” across the LCD display when activated. This feature enhances visibility in low-light conditions and brings an interactive element to the design, echoing the excitement of drawing a Wild Card during a game.

Whimsical touch in case back engraving

Turning the watch over, the attention to detail continues. The case back is engraved with the game logo and a playful arrangement of the 1, 6, and 8 cards—corresponding to the model number. This hidden touch adds an element of surprise and delight, much like discovering a special card in the deck.

Back engraving

The technical features are equally impressive. The case size measures 38.6 x 36.3 x 9.6 mm and weighs 49 grams. The case and bezel are made of resin with chrome plating, while the band is stainless steel with an adjustable clasp for a comfortable fit. The watch is water-resistant, making it suitable for everyday wear.

Band clasp engraved in UNO card pattern

It boasts an impressive battery life of approximately seven years, powered by a CR2016 battery. The watch face is protected by resin glass, ensuring durability, and the black ion-plated band is both stylish and resilient. It features a 1/100-second stopwatch with a measuring capacity of up to 59’59.99″ and various modes, including elapsed time, split time, and 1st- and 2nd-place times.

It is equipped with a daily alarm and hourly time signal to keep you punctual. The electroluminescent backlight illuminates the display in blue, enhancing visibility. An auto-calendar function ensures accurate date-keeping, accounting for leap years. The watch maintains an accuracy of ±30 seconds per month and supports both 12-hour and 24-hour formats, displaying hours, minutes, seconds, PM, date, and day.

Special packaging

This unique watch comes in co-branded packaging, highlighting the collaboration while embracing sustainability. The packaging features the four iconic card colors and is made from recycled materials, reflecting a commitment to environmental responsibility. This collaborative watch is more than just a timepiece; it celebrates two iconic brands from the 1970s. It combines the nostalgia and fun of the card game with the reliable and stylish design of the watch, creating a unique and functional accessory that appeals to both watch enthusiasts and fans of the classic card game. Priced at $99.95, this special edition watch is available now online.

Beyond the Watch Head: The Importance of Straps in Your Timepiece Experience

]]>

Choosing between metal and soft material straps significantly impacts comfort and style when selecting a watch—metals like stainless steel and titanium offer durability and a premium feel. Titanium, in particular, is favored for its lightweight properties, making it comfortable for prolonged wear without the heaviness that often accompanies metal watches.

Metal straps often come with adjustable links that ensure a perfect fit, providing security and balance on the wrist. However, the weight of metal can sometimes be a drawback. For larger watch heads, this can potentially cause discomfort over extended periods.

In contrast, soft material straps provide greater comfort and breathability. Leather straps are classic and versatile, suitable for formal and casual settings. They mold to the wrist over time, providing a personalized fit. Rubber straps are perfect for sporty and active lifestyles, offering flexibility and resistance to water and sweat.

Canvas straps combine durability with a rugged aesthetic, ideal for casual wear. These materials significantly reduce the overall weight of the watch, enhancing wearability and comfort, particularly in warmer climates or during physical activities.

Buying a Watch: The Whole Package

When buying a watch, it’s essential to consider the whole package rather than just falling “head over heels” for the watch head alone. The watch’s fit, feel, and overall weight are crucial in the wearing experience. If a lightweight watch is a priority but you prefer metal, opting for a bracelet made of lightweight materials like titanium is a wise choice. Titanium offers the durability of metal without the associated weight, making it comfortable for extended wear.

Exploring options with leather, rubber, or canvas straps can provide the desired comfort without the added weight. Leather straps are known for their timeless appeal and versatility, molding to the wrist for a custom fit over time. Rubber straps are ideal for those with an active lifestyle, offering flexibility and resistance to environmental factors such as water and sweat.

Canvas straps are durable and rugged, perfect for casual wear and outdoor activities. Considering the strap’s overall weight and material, one can ensure a balanced and comfortable wearing experience.

Strap and Buckle Options: Tang vs. Deployment

The choice of strap and buckle can significantly impact the user experience. Tang buckles, traditional and straightforward, offer reliability and ease of adjustment. They are commonly found on leather and fabric straps and are known for their simplicity and effectiveness. Tang buckles are easy to use and allow quick adjustments, making them a practical choice for everyday wear. However, they might not distribute the weight of the watch evenly, which can cause discomfort over extended periods.

Deployment buckles, on the other hand, add a touch of sophistication and ensure the watch stays securely on the wrist. These buckles are often found on metal and high-end leather straps, providing a more refined appearance and making the watch easier to put on and take off. Deployment buckles help distribute the weight of the watch more evenly across the wrist, enhancing comfort and reducing pressure points. The clasp mechanism allows for a secure fit and easy adjustment, making it a preferred choice for those looking for both style and functionality.

Analysis of the Omega Swatch MoonSwatch Strap

Reflecting on our recent review of the Omega Swatch MoonSwatch Mission to Earth Lava on Yanko Design, it’s essential to compare the included Velcro strap with the official Omega deployment buckle and canvas strap. While the Velcro strap thematically fits with the MoonSwatch series, it may not offer the same comfort level as a traditional leather or fabric strap. The Velcro can feel stiff and less breathable, which might be an issue in warmer climates or during physical activity.

In contrast, the official Omega deployment buckle and canvas strap provide enhanced comfort and a secure fit. The deployment buckle makes the watch feel more integrated, keeping it in place while maintaining a lightweight profile. The canvas strap is comfortable and lightweight, offering a perfect blend of durability and flexibility.

The deployment buckle and the high-quality strap combine to ensure the watch stays balanced and does not shift on the wrist, providing a superior wearing experience.

Personal Note and Conclusion

I love how the integrated strap and deployment buckle makes the watch feel. They keep the whole watch balanced, stay in place, and are lightweight. The comfort and stability provided by this combination elevate the overall wearing experience.

However, it’s essential to consider the price, as the buckle and strap alone cost more than the Swatch itself. You can change the strap and buckle if you own more than one Omega Swatch or even a proper Omega Speedmaster. Now that’s maximizing your purchase, plus you’ve found the strap you love.

Despite the cost—over $500 for the buckle and strap alone—this investment can be justified if you own multiple Omega Swatch models or even a proper Omega Speedmaster. The ability to interchange straps and buckles maximizes your purchase and allows personalization. The official deployment buckle and canvas strap provide enhanced comfort and a secure fit, making the watch feel balanced and stable on the wrist.

I hope you found this information useful in this Wristwatch Wednesday edition, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Apple Watch X Leaks: 10th Anniversary Edition Rumored to Feature Larger Display and Magnetic Band

]]>

Apple is gearing up to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its iconic wearable, and anticipation around the upcoming Apple Watch Series 10, or possibly Apple Watch X, is building. This milestone edition is rumored to bring significant updates and design enhancements, as suggested by recent leaks and renders from 91mobiles.

Designer: Apple

One of the most notable changes, as highlighted by 91mobiles, is the larger 2-inch display, the biggest ever on an Apple Watch. This new screen size is set to exceed the 1.93-inch display of the Apple Watch Ultra and the 1.7-inch display of the Apple Watch Series 9. According to the renders, the dimensions of the Series 10 are approximately 46 by 39.7 by 11.6 mm, making it larger than the Series 9 but still smaller than the Ultra.

Source 91mobiles.com: Apple Watch Series 10 CAD render

Another intriguing rumor is the potential redesign of the band connection system. The Apple Watch Series 10 might introduce a new magnetic band attachment system, replacing the current slide-in mechanism. This change could free up valuable internal space, possibly allowing for a larger battery or additional components. However, the CAD renders from 91mobiles do not show clear evidence of this new band attachment system. If it does make its way into the final design, the magnetic connection could contribute to a thinner overall watch.

Source 91mobiles.com: Apple Watch Series 10 CAD render

Despite these possible changes, the renders suggest that the Apple Watch Series 10 will maintain several familiar design elements. The iconic square display, digital crown, and side button appear to stay in their usual places. This consistency ensures that while the watch may evolve, it retains the recognizable aesthetic that has become synonymous with the Apple Watch brand.

Source 91mobiles.com: Apple Watch Series 10 CAD render

Adding to the excitement, WWDC 2024 introduced several new features we look forward to seeing in the Apple Watch Series 10. One of the most anticipated is the enhanced mental health monitoring capabilities, which will offer users a more comprehensive view of their well-being. Another is the advanced sleep tracking feature, providing detailed insights and personalized recommendations for improving sleep quality.

The upcoming watchOS also promises better integration with Apple Fitness+, bringing more guided workouts and real-time metrics directly to the wrist. A redesigned Siri interface, now more intuitive and responsive, will make interacting with the watch easier and more efficient. Finally, the new low-power mode is expected to extend battery life significantly, a welcome improvement for users who rely on their watch throughout the day and night.

While these leaks and renders from 91mobiles provide an exciting glimpse into the potential features of the Apple Watch Series 10, it is essential to approach them with caution. The actual design and features will only be confirmed with the official announcement, expected to coincide with the launch of the iPhone 16 series in September.

As Apple continues to innovate and refine its wearable technology, the Apple Watch Series 10 promises to be a significant step forward. It will combine a larger display, potential new band attachment system, and familiar design elements with the exciting new features announced at WWDC 2024. Fans and users eagerly await the official reveal to see how these rumored enhancements will translate into the next generation of the Apple Watch.

The devices and gear we own today are vastly different from the ones our grandparents owned. Back in the day, products could be pulled apart, tinkered with, and repaired without much of a fuss. Radios lasted decades, toasters from that era still work today, but the devices of today are a little too complicated to repair or tinker with. In fact, the companies that make these devices don’t even want you looking under the hood – try tinkering with a Tesla car and the company can remotely disable your entire vehicle for tampering. Mess with an Apple phone and its warranty gets voided. If you bought a Spotify Car Thing, regardless of your efforts, the company is planning on bricking the device globally at the end of this year.

The reality is that we aren’t intimately familiar with the stuff we own today, and it’s time we changed that. The folks at Rotate Watches believe the only way to change this is to make tinkering more accessible. This beginner-friendly 50+ piece kit lets you build your own working, automatic watch movement from scratch. Modeled on the Seiko NH36, this kit has everything you need to be an amateur horologist. A guide helps take you through the various processes, and at the end, not only do you have a working watch that you can keep on your table to tell the date and time, but you also inherit an innate understanding of how timepieces work… and that’s just priceless, isn’t it?!

Designer: Rotate Watches

The Seiko NH36 is a popular and reliable automatic movement known for its accuracy and durability. With a diameter of 29.36mm and a height of 5.32mm, it’s a compact powerhouse featuring 24 jewels for reduced friction and a smooth operation. This kit includes the movement itself, along with a set of specialized tools to handle the delicate watch parts. Screwdrivers, tweezers, finger cots, and pliers are all included, ensuring you have everything you need to handle the intricate components.

One of the highlights of this kit is the beginner-friendly guide. Rotate, the company behind the kit, understands that watchmaking can be intimidating for newcomers. Their detailed instructions break down the disassembly and assembly process into clear steps, accompanied by numbered pictures for easy reference. The guide goes beyond just the mechanics, explaining the purpose of each piece and offering helpful tips and tricks throughout the process. For those who prefer a greater challenge, Rotate also offers the option to receive the movement disassembled. This allows experienced hobbyists to dive right into the reassembly process, testing their watchmaking skills.

EDITOR'S QUOTE:

The MoonSwatch Mission to Earth Lava is a bold, vibrant take on a legendary design, seamlessly merging Omega’s legacy with Swatch’s innovative materials.

Omega and Swatch have teamed up again to release the latest MoonSwatch series, “Mission on Earth.” This collection introduces three exciting models: Lava, Polar Lights, and Desert. Each watch draws inspiration from natural elements found on Earth, infusing fresh and vibrant details into the iconic Speedmaster design.

Designer: Omega + Swatch

During a work trip to Tokyo, I timed my visit perfectly with the launch of these new models. The buzz around the MoonSwatch collection was undeniable, and the excitement was palpable. After waiting in line at the Swatch location in Ginza, I snagged the model I wanted: the Lava. Its bold color and unique design immediately caught my attention, and I was eager to see if it lived up to the hype. I picked one up from the boutique to thoroughly review it for Yanko Design.

Aesthetics

The Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch Mission to Earth Lava grabs attention with its bright orange bioceramic case. This vibrant color is more than just eye-catching; it’s a deliberate nod to the Speedmaster “Ultraman,” known for its striking orange seconds hand. The bright orange of the case brings a sense of energy and intensity, much like the molten lava it’s named after. This daring color sets it apart from traditional Speedmasters and makes it a standout piece.

Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch Mission to Earth Lava

The case retains the iconic twisted lug design that has been a hallmark of the Speedmaster since 1963. This feature, combined with the new bioceramic material, keeps the watch lightweight and durable. The satin/matte finish on the case avoids the cheap look that polished plastic can sometimes have, giving it a refined and sleek appearance. Every curve and edge of the case mirrors the classic Speedmaster design, ensuring it remains recognizable and authentic to its roots.

The black dial contrasts the orange case sharply, making the orange elements pop and enhancing readability. The dial is full of thoughtful design elements. The subdials, positioned at two, six, and ten, feature Arabic numerals and radial indexes. These subdials are a nod to the Speedmaster Alaska II and III projects, integrating a piece of Omega’s rich history into the design.

Mooonswatch Mission on Earth: Lava

A notable feature on the dial is the full black circle that marks where the “step” would be on older Speedmaster models. This line helps segment the dial, making reading and organizing information easier. While an actual step might add more depth, this design choice effectively maintains aesthetic and functional clarity.

The hands are another highlight. The chronograph functions are emphasized with deep orange, matching the case. The hour, minute, and active seconds hands are in dark khaki, complementing the overall color scheme. These hands are coated with Super-LumiNova, ensuring they glow brightly in the dark. This feature adds both functionality and a cool visual effect when the lights go down.

Mooonswatch Mission on Earth: Lava

The tachymeter scale on the bezel is classic Speedmaster, complete with the iconic “dot over 90” detail. Using orange for the tachymeter text ties it back to the overall color scheme. The tachymeter acts as an extension of the dial, maintaining the watch’s cohesive look.

Ergonomics

When it comes to ergonomics, the MoonSwatch Mission to Earth Lava delivers. The 42mm case diameter is a familiar size for Speedmaster fans, offering a balanced presence on the wrist. Bioceramic material (plastic) makes the watch notably lightweight, adding to its comfort during extended wear. This is a significant advantage over traditional steel cases, which can feel heavy after a long day.

Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch Mission to Earth Lava

The iconic twisted lugs enhance the watch’s aesthetic appeal and comfortable fit. They ensure the watch sits snugly on the wrist without causing discomfort. The 13.25mm thickness is slightly more substantial than some might expect, but it doesn’t detract from the overall wearability.

One area where the Lava could improve is the strap. While thematically fitting with the MoonSwatch series, the included Velcro strap may not offer the same level of comfort as a traditional leather or fabric strap. The strap can feel stiff and less breathable, which might be an issue in warmer climates or during physical activity. I appreciate the natural curve in the strap. However, for my wrist, it feels short. For my 14-year-old daughter’s wrist, it fits perfectly. The dial and case dimensions sit well on her wrist and look fantastic. She loves motorsport, especially F1, so this gift gave her a taste of the world of collecting watches without the high cost.

Despite this, the MoonSwatch Mission to Earth Lava’s overall ergonomics is impressive. It’s a watch designed for daily wear, providing visual appeal and practical comfort. Whether you’re a longtime Speedmaster fan or new to Omega, this watch offers a unique blend of style and wearability.

Performance

The Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch Mission to Earth Lava delivers solid performance for everyday wear. Powered by a precise quartz movement with four jewels, it ensures accurate timekeeping and smooth operation. This reliability means you won’t need to adjust the watch frequently, making it a hassle-free option for busy schedules.

Changing the battery is straightforward, unlike many high-end watches that require specialized tools and expertise. This user-friendly feature enhances the watch’s longevity, allowing you to keep it running smoothly for years without needing professional servicing.

Mooonswatch Mission on Earth: Lava

The push buttons on the Lava model are satisfyingly tactile, providing a responsive feel that makes using the chronograph functions enjoyable. This level of tactile feedback is usually found in much more expensive timepieces, adding to the overall value and user experience of the MoonSwatch.

Durability is another strong point of the MoonSwatch. The case is made from Bioceramic, which combines ceramic and bio-sourced plastic. Bioceramic is lightweight yet incredibly tough, resisting scratches and dents far better than traditional metal cases. This is a significant advantage over the “real” Omega Speedmaster, which, while iconic, can show wear and tear more readily. The Bioceramic material ensures that your watch maintains its pristine look even with regular use.

The Bioceramic case also contributes to the watch’s comfort. It remains temperature neutral so that it won’t get too hot or cold on your wrist, regardless of the weather. This feature enhances the overall wearing experience, making it an excellent choice for all-day wear.

Overall, the MoonSwatch Mission to Earth Lava offers a blend of style, practicality, and durability, making it an excellent addition to any watch collection. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or new to Omega, this watch delivers on performance and aesthetics.

Sustainability

Swatch has stepped up its game with the Bioceramic MoonSwatch collection, making significant strides in sustainability. Bioceramic is a blend of ceramic and bio-sourced plastic derived from castor oil. This innovative material reduces reliance on traditional petroleum-based plastics, helping to lower the carbon footprint of these watches.

Making Bioceramic is more sustainable, as it uses renewable resources and aims to minimize waste. Swatch is committed to energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact across its production practices, which is a big plus for eco-conscious consumers.

Moreover, the user-friendly battery replacement feature means you can keep your watch running for years, reducing the need for frequent replacements and reducing electronic waste. The robust and durable Bioceramic case also ensures that the watch lasts longer, decreasing the need for new materials and manufacturing.

Choosing a MoonSwatch means getting a stylish and functional timepiece and supporting a brand that is actively trying to protect the environment.

Value + Verdict

The Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch Mission to Earth Lava offers impressive value for its retail price of around $270. Given its enjoyment and unique features, this watch is well worth the money. The combination of Omega’s iconic design and Swatch’s innovative Bioceramic material creates a stylish and functional timepiece.

What makes the MoonSwatch series particularly appealing is the variety of models available. Each watch from Earth to Mars and beyond offers a unique design inspired by different celestial bodies. This variety allows for a fun collecting experience, as you can choose different models to match your attire or mood. The affordability of the MoonSwatch series makes it accessible to a wide range of watch enthusiasts, allowing you to build a versatile collection without breaking the bank.

Swatch x Omega Bioceramic Moonswatch Series

With its bold orange case and thoughtful design details, the Lava model stands out as a vibrant and unique addition to any watch collection. The user-friendly battery replacement and durable Bioceramic case ensure that this watch will provide enjoyment for years to come. Its lightweight and comfortable fit make it suitable for daily wear, while its striking aesthetics make it a conversation starter.

In conclusion, the Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch Mission to Earth Lava is a fantastic investment for anyone looking to add a distinctive and enjoyable watch to their collection. The classic Speedmaster design elements blend with modern materials and sustainability efforts, making this watch a standout choice. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or new to the world of watches, the MoonSwatch series offers something unique that will surely delight you.

Swiss horologer, Laurent Ferrier, is known for making watches that are timeless yet modern in all accounts. Their ultimate amalgamation of form, function, and aesthetics put LF watches ahead of the curve, and its new design, a revival of a flagship piece with touch of playfulness and art, is a fine embodiment.

To celebrate the longevity of the flagship Classic Micro-Rotor, the watchmaker has collaborated with French artist Hervé Di Rosa and arrived at this recovered timepiece that reflects the timeless elegance and minimalism of Laurent Ferrier and the creativity and imaginative artistry of Di Rosa. The five-piece limited edition watch is a testament to the fine collaboration and exchange of expertise between the watchmaker and the artist.

Designer: Laurent Ferrier

Hervé Di Rosa is a renowned name in the French and International art scene. Best known for being the pioneer of the Figuration Libre art movement in the 1980s, the 64-year-old artist unveiled “Hervé Di Rosa – The Worlds-Passer,” a retrospective exhibition in Paris at the Centre Pompidou, which celebrates his life’s work. In celebration of this occasion, the globetrotting artist has given a new artistic makeover to the Classic Micro-Rotor.

The watch keeps the curves of the Classic case, which is inspired by the pocket watches of the 19th century. The round stainless steel case measures 40mm and features a strikingly different dial comprising a 12-armed character named “Ah! Ah! Ah!” It is a design adapted from one of Di Rosa’s vibrant and chaotic paintings from 1984 called the Dirosapocalypse.

The dial of the Classic Micro-Rotor is completely hand-engraved and it’s made from 18-carat white gold. The artistic dial is topped with the iconic white gold assegai-shaped hands that blend with the base, yet stand out in their appearance. The watch case, on the side, has a ball-shaped winding crown, while the sapphire glass case back leaves you admiring the movement. The in-house FBN 229.01 automatic winding calibre has a 72 hours power reserve. The limited edition Classic Micro-Rotor Di Rosa is 30-meter water resistant, and priced at 80,000 CHF (roughly $90,000).

Are Smartwatches Becoming Obsolete? A Look at AI and Smart Rings

Many of the devices that exist today were, at some point in time, inspired by science fiction, from personal computers to smartphones to tablets. Smartwatches, in particular, may have partly been imagined after seeing wrist-worn communication devices in some sci-fi shows and flicks. Of course, today’s smartwatches are more practical and less sensational, even as they demonstrate the marvels of technology squeezed in such a small space. But smartwatches aren’t the booming business that manufacturers hoped they would be, at least not compared to smartwatches, and every year brings doubts about this product category’s future. This year is no different, especially with new technologies like smart rings and especially AI trying to take center stage, even when it comes to health and fitness.

Designer: Apple

What Are Smartwatches For?

Defining smartwatches has never been easy. Simply saying that they are watches that can mirror notifications from your phone and track your activity is both a disservice and an oversimplification. Given all that they can do these days, seeing them as miniature smartphones on your wrist isn’t exactly inaccurate, though the user experience is significantly limited due to the small screen and feeble hardware. In fact, the very first batch of smartwatches from smartphone makers pretty much tried to sell that image with little success.

Designer: Google

It wasn’t until the Apple Watch and anecdotes of its life-saving features that this wearable really defined its identity in the market. It was, for all intents and purposes, a wearable health tracker masquerading as a timepiece. And depending on the brand and style of the smartwatch, it may or may not pass for a luxury watch, at least from a distance. It basically pushed fitness trackers out of the scene, with more advanced sensors, a more flexible user experience, and connectivity to a smartphone. Over time, however, people and even companies have also started to wonder why they still have a smartwatch, especially with upcoming technologies and designs that offer more choices especially when it comes to aesthetics and style.

True Wearables

Smartwatches are perhaps the world’s first taste of wearable technologies, but that’s hardly the only incarnation possible. Ideally, true wearables will be something you can, well, wear, including clothing, footwear, and especially jewelry. These weren’t possible years ago, but technology and manufacturing are thankfully catching up and, soon, people won’t have to ditch their heirloom mechanical watches just because they want to monitor their health 24/7.

Smart rings, for example, try to offer at least the basics of activity tracking and health monitoring but in a more discreet form that doesn’t get in the way, at least if you’re used to wearing rings all day. A ring would let you wear your favorite timepiece, or wear a different watch for any occasion, all without losing those important health stats. There are also attempts at developing other kinds of smart jewelry that also have health sensors or apparel that let you control your phone or other devices. These are wearables in the truest sense of the term, and they won’t be just science fiction soon.

AI Craze

Another trend gripping the tech industry as a whole is also putting the usefulness of smartwatches into question. AI can be found anywhere these days, from image generators to note-taking apps. Of course, tech companies have long been touting AI-powered services via cloud-based personal assistants, but the trend these days is moving the bulk of the work to the device itself. Smartphones might be powerful enough to support this kind of AI, but smartwatches don’t have that much silicon muscle, at least not without burning through their already meager battery lives.

Designer: Google

It’s actually curious that both Apple and Google have been rather silent about their latest AI features when it comes to their own smartwatches, possibly hinting they won’t be coming any time soon. It’s certainly possible for smartwatches to offload the work to the smartphones they’re connected to, but the latency might be too much to ask as well. It could still be good for the occasional verbal question to AI services, but nothing that actually makes a smartwatch a must-have for this purpose.

Distraction Station

If health monitoring and AI won’t be the exclusive domain of smartwatches, then one must wonder what other unique experiences they offer. Unlike a smart ring or even a fitness tracker, a smartwatch offers more advanced features related to a smartphone, like reading notifications in full, replying to messages, or even viewing some apps in a smaller form. But are these actually advantages or are they merely showing off feats of technology that actually become detrimental to users in the end?

Designer: Samsung

Smartphones are notorious for being sources of distractions, which is why there is a counter-movement of phones espousing minimalism or devices with distraction-free experiences. You can, of course, select only the notifications you really need to see on your wrist, but even smartphones have that same function anyway. In reality, smartwatches make it too easy to be distracted by those notifications without even pulling out your phone, and you spend more time looking at your smartwatch than you would a regular watch. Funnily enough, the people around you wouldn’t even have a clue that you’re wearing a smartwatch and would simply presume you’re being impatient.

Fringe Benefits

That said, there are definitely things that only a smartwatch can offer, at least for now. Smart rings, due to their size, can only offer a small selection of sensors to monitor your health. For more advanced biometrics, you’ll need a larger device to wear, like a smartwatch or a fitness band. There are also still some discussions on whether a ring or a watch is more accurate, though both naturally pale in comparison to medical equipment.

Designer: Apple

Unlike a fitness band, a smartwatch also offers more flexibility when it comes to aesthetics. After all, it can masquerade as a traditional watch given the right band and watch face. More active people might also want a fuller activity-tracking experience without having to wear a watch and a fitness tracker at the same time, and a smartwatch definitely bridges the gap between the two.

Final Thoughts: Smartwatches Today and Tomorrow

Just when the smartwatch market seems to have secured its footing, its future comes into question once again. Luxury brands that once tried to portray smartwatches as fashionable accessories have now pulled back from the market, leaving only tech companies to do the heavy lifting. Some of these tech companies, however, are looking into smart rings as well, and their AI endeavors don’t seem to have a place on smartwatches either. Smartwatches aren’t going to disappear immediately, and they might finally be able to have enough processing power and battery capacity to support even the most basic on-device AI features, but it might be time to again rethink what role smartwatches play in our modern world.

When Noah NY and Timex collaborate, the result is a masterpiece of timeless elegance fused with contemporary streetwear sensibilities. Their latest collaboration, a refined tank wristwatch, showcases the best of both brands. This watch, with its gold-tone rectangular case and crisp white dial, blends classic American style with contemporary elements, making it a must-have for any watch enthusiast.

Designer: Noah NY + Timex

Noah NY, founded by Brendon Babenzien and Estelle Bailey-Babenzien, has made a name for itself with its mix of 1990s skate culture and 1980s preppy vibes, all while staying committed to sustainability. Brendon, who was the design chief at Supreme, created Noah to reflect his unique style, making it a brand known for its originality and social consciousness. Meanwhile, Timex, famous for its durability and classic design, has been a go-to in the watch world for over a century. Known for making affordable yet high-quality watches, Timex continues to maintain its heritage of precision and reliability. This collaboration with Noah demonstrates how well they can blend tradition with modern style.

Noah NY + Timex

The Noah x Timex watch is a visual delight, starting with its gold-tone rectangular case that nods to early 20th-century classics like the Cartier Tank and Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. Babenzien wanted this watch to feel like a family heirloom, timeless and special. The elegant case frames a crisp white dial, perfect for showcasing its detailed design. The dial features 12 Roman numerals that stand out against the clean backdrop, adding to its vintage charm. The watch’s minute track, with its delicate gold-tone accents, adds a touch of precision and old-school elegance to the overall look.

The centerpiece of the dial is the moon phase indicator, a feature that adds both functionality and an element of poetic elegance. This indicator transitions between a smirking sun face and a crescent moon with stars, reflecting the passage of time in a visually captivating manner. This feature not only serves a practical purpose but also enhances the watch’s aesthetic appeal, making it a conversation starter. The golden hour and minute hands are dipped in black, providing a striking contrast that enhances legibility. The blackened second’s hand complements these elements, further enhancing the watch’s refined aesthetics. A subtle yet distinctive Noah logo replaces the numeral III, adding a streetwear-inspired flair to the otherwise traditional design. This logo placement showcases Noah’s influence on the watch, blending seamlessly with Timex’s classic elements.

Noah NY Logo

Complementing the sophisticated dial is a croc-embossed leather strap. This eco-friendly strap not only adds a layer of luxury but also ensures comfort and durability, aligning with Noah’s emphasis on sustainability. The textured finish of the strap contrasts beautifully with the smooth lines of the case, creating a harmonious balance between traditional and contemporary design elements.

Noah NY + TImex watch on croc-embossed leather strap

Priced at $198, the Noah x Timex watch offers remarkable value for a piece of such design and craftsmanship. Its classic design, combined with modern touches and high-quality materials, makes it a versatile accessory that can elevate any outfit. The quartz movement, as opposed to a mechanical one, makes the watch both more durable and affordable, a key benefit highlighted by Babenzien. This durability ensures it is hardy enough for everyday wear while maintaining an elegant appearance. The watch’s design versatility allows it to be paired with a wide range of outfits, from contrast-collar dress shirts and linen trousers to knit polos and pleated shorts.

The real draw of this watch is its exclusivity. When it first dropped, it sold out in seconds, leaving many disappointed. The good news is Noah has opened up pre-orders for this highly sought-after timepiece. Due to the limited supply, the watch won’t ship until April 2025. This is a rare chance to snag a piece of this limited-edition collaboration. Don’t miss out—head over to Noah’s website to secure your pre-order today and join the select group of enthusiasts who will own this unique watch.
